DIY Beauty : Oatmeal, banana and honey face mask

Earlier on this afternoon, I found myself home alone. Properly, completely, home alone. Apart from the dogs of course, but it was absolutely fabulous. We have no immediate neighbours, so I had some of my favourite music playing loud, and I decided it was time for some pampering.

Times like this call for three things - a good book, some chocolate, and a face mask. There was a slight problem though... my face mask was MIA, and there was no chance of nipping to Lush to buy my favourite Oatifix face mask either. So what is a girl to do? I had the following options:
1.  Using one I have somewhere in my bathroom - Soap & Glory's Fab Pore face mask (full review of why I hate that here).
2.  Making my own using ingredients in my kitchen.
3.  Going without.

A quick look on the Lush website says the main ingredients of Oatifix are oatmeal, bananas, vanilla and almonds. Hmmm, look like I was making my own then! I had a rummage around my kitchen for the ingredients, and I found some Quaker Oats, some bananas, some vanilla extract... but no almonds. I wasn't really wanting an exfoliating scrub, so decided it'd be okay to omit them from my recipe, and I wasn't particularly keen on the idea of smearing vanilla extract all over my face either, so I decided to use some honey in its place. Honey is particularly good for moisturising dry skin, and it seemed perfect for this recipe.

Ingredients
1/4 cup of oats (ya know, porridge! I used a baking set that measures in cups, but it's about 15g)
1/4 cup of milk (according to my set that's about 60mls)
1 tablespoon of honey
Half a banana

Method
1. Mix the oats and milk together and microwave for about a minute, then set aside to cool slightly. When you pull it out, it will be really thick - don't worry, you'll be mixing it with other things, plus it needs to be thick to smear across your face :)

2. Whilst the porridge is cooling, mash up your banana. I hate mashing bananas because they go all slimy and gooey, but needs must and all that.

3. Stir the honey into the porridge and sniff it. Smells good, doesn't it? I could happily eat that for breakfast if I ate breakfast.

4. Mix the banana into the porridge mixture, and pull a face at how slimy it looks.

5. Put in the fridge to cool. I let it cool for about an hour, because I wanted it to feel cold and refreshing like the Lush one does.

I'm not going to lie to you, it looks grim. It looks like sick, truth be told, but it smells really yummy! So I made myself a mug of hot chocolate, grabbed my book, and went upstairs so I wouldn't be caught short if anyone came home! I slathered it on as best I could, which was pretty impossible to be honest. It didn't want to stay on my face! In the end I settled for slapping it on in random places, then slapping some more on when some fell off. Luckily I decided to protect myself with a towel... I swear there were more bits on it than on my face!

After a few minutes, it started to dry. It didn't make my face feel tight, but the sliminess was definitely disappearing, and it stopped dropping off my face. It was hilarious at first, granted, but I was starting to get frustrated when it wouldn't stick. After about 15 minutes I decided to wash it off. The novelty had worn off and I couldn't do anything because I was covered in goo. I didn't dare pick up my book or take a sip of my chocolate! It washed off really easily with just some warm water though, which is a good thing I think. Warning - your sink will look minging once you're done!

I patted myself dry and my skin felt A-MAY-ZING!! It felt so soft and smooth, and looked quite healthy. The redness on my cheeks had calmed down significantly, and my shiny forehead was looking glowy rather than greasy. I'm uber-impressed. I love Oatifix, and it's nice to have someone else to do the work for me, but for times when I can't get to Lush or am on a spending ban, this is a perfect alternative. Sure, it's messy, but I giggled loads... and laughter is the best medicine, is it not? And besides, that's half the fun of making your own products... otherwise, why bother?

Have you ever tried mixing your own face mask? I know the aspirin mask is a popular choice, but this one was much more enjoyable, and I am seriously impressed with the results :)

xoxo
