Dickson Niew Collection Shop

Yesterday I visit Dickson Niew Collection shop at Subang Jaya, Seksyen 14. Many of my Facebook friends must have been adding him as a friends in Facebook or had been meeting him recently at Malaysia Numismatic Society Auction No.149 in Jabatan Muzium Malaysia, Muzium Negara on 25 September. He has already work as a full time dealer since the last two months but still busy doing preparation for his new shop. I only knew about his shop when I meet him during MNS auction. For anyone of you who still don't know, he is the one that I mention in I meet Malaysia coin expert.

Finding Dickson Shop is not that hard if you're familiar with Jalan Kewajipan, Subang Jaya, Just look for Seksyen 14 signboard. If you're from KESAS, just head to Subang Parade/Carrefour Subang. When you find a roundabout, turn left (first exit) and enter USJ 14 junction. His shop is just few blocks away from that junction, just look for "Zhong Hua Tea Trading Sdn Bhd". Dickson shop is sharing with the same shop. If you're looking at Lebuhraya Pantai Bahru, the shop is near to the pedestrian bridge. You can also go there by Komuter but you need to get a taxi/bus to his place. (double click the maps for larger view)

Dickson Niew Collection shop
Address: 58, Jalan SS14/2, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor.
Tel: +60-179796337 (better called him before you make a visit)
E-mail: dniew33@streamyx.com, dicksonniew@gmail.com

Mr. Dickson suppose to finish bringing his stock in 2 weeks times. Right now, Some of his coins and banknotes stock is not in the shop. You need to contact him for appointment and told him what kind of collection that you like to buy. At the time of my visit yesterday, I can see many tin coins (Malay, Sumatera, Duit Ayam), Malaysia Silver Commemorative coins, Error banknotes, Uncut banknotes, Japan Invasion Money and coins & banknotes accesories (coin holder, coin album, banknote album, magnifying glass ). He also sell some collectibles; Coke-cola door handle, Coke-cola clock. A popular RM50 Merdeka Gold Line series is also on sale for a very reasonable price.

Many of my Facebook friends had been asking if he give discount or his price is good. Currently he is doing some sort of promotion for his new shop and giving a very nice discount. You need to called him yourself, and ask for it. Like this "A biography of President Yusof bin Ishak" complete set books is free if you bought that banknote. You can see more pictures of the shop in my new Facebook page album; Dickson Niew Collection. Maybe Mr. Dickson want to add something in here?

Review & Giveaway: Pür Minerals

I have used mineral makeup for years now...I was using a certain brand until I tried Pür Minerals last year and since then I have never looked back! Their 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup is my favorite makeup product!  Pür Minerals just released its 4 in 1 Pressed Mineral Powder with built-in skincare. The new 4-in-1  uses proprietary encapsulated ingredients like age-defying Ceretin Complex--a combination of highly purified, nonirritating retinol and moisture-maximizing ceramides--to smooth away the look of lines, combat visible discoloration and encourage a brighter, even-toned complexion.

In an eight-week clinical study*, 89 percent of subjects saw an increase in brilliance in just four weeks, while over 95 percent saw a softer, smoother texture. In six weeks, 75 percent experienced visibly less skin irritation than before, and 88 percent reported less facial shine. By the study's end, over 95 percent reported a firmer feel and finish with less visible pores, while 89 percent saw an overall improvement in skin tone--all after the makeup came off.

A bit about Pür Minerals
Pür Minerals, has pioneered a performance-based line of colour cosmetics and skin care treatments designed for optimal skin fitness and health. Their pressed mineral colour formulations are specially engineered with good-for-your-skin ingredients that not only offer exceptional coverage, but also nourish and condition the skin for a healthy radiance. Pür Minerals multitasking skin care products eliminate the need for complicated regimens to keep  beauty pür and simple.
Why Pür Minerals?
Pür Minerals products contain NO harsh chemical dyes, petroleum-based oils, fragrance or fillers, just pure mineral pigments and nourishing actives that ALL skin types can enjoy. By combining the finest in technology with the finest in nature, Pür Minerals bridges the gap between mineral cosmetics and full-service skin care.

My Review
   I was sent the brand new Pür Minerals 'Start Now 5-Piece Kit' to review. The  Start Now Kit contains;
  •  4 in 1 Pressed Mineral Makeup and Chisel Brush
Forget the mess and go pressed! With Pür Minerals you never have to deal with anymore messy loose powders! The 4 in 1 Pressed Mineral Makeup is a concealer, foundation and powder in one. It also has a built in SPF of 15. I love the 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral makeup because it gives me great coverage without clogging my pores and is great for travel. I especially love the 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup because it doesn't feel like I am wearing any makeup at all. I wet the included chisel brush and blot it into my 4 in 1 Mineral Makeup and then I use it to lay a even foundation over my face. The result? A smooth, even and glowing complexion.  4 in 1 is available in seven different shades to compliment any skin tone.

  • Neutral Primer
Wait! Wait! Before you apply the 4 in 1 Pressed Mineral Makeup the neutral primer is a must. The Neutral primer primes the face for makeup by minimizing pores, fine lines, age spots, and dark circles. I wasn't sure that I would like the Neutral Primer since I have pretty clear skin but the primer made my skin SO smooth and even. It covers blemishes and my dark under-eye circles and keeps my makeup from looking streaky.

  • Impact+ Mascara
Both of my sisters got the long eyelashes in the family...I somehow missed out so Impact+ Mascara is my new best friend. Impact+ Mascara lets me build the intensity of my eyelashes and lengthens and thickens my eyelashes to my liking. It is rich in vitamins and conditioners and is free of synthetic dyes and parabens. I think this is my new favorite mascara....!

*Results from an eight-week clinical study using 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup, Correcting Primer and Mineral Glow.

Japanese Palate

I got a call back! I never get those! I agreed to it before I was told the location. Stupid rookie mistake. The interview call back was at a different location than where I put in my application.

I was gonna have my dad drive me, but he was already super crabby and I didn't want to deal with it. It's the same as usual.
Dad: If you don't let me drive you. You're gonna fail and get lost! Don't complain about it!
Me: Fine! (thinking) I already had to endure a job fair with you yesterday.

The place wasn't too hard to find. The biggest problem was that I had to get up really early. I hadn't slept in for days. I did sorta get lost. (But I wasn't going to tell my dad) The map lied it looked closer on the map then it was in real life. Even though the map estimated it was 1/11th of a mile.

When I finally got there. I was still early. But listening to music on headphones in really frowned upon. I learned that at a job fair. :(

Here's how I interpreted it. They really needed another person for back up, and my application was at the bottom of the barrel. It made me think about my questionable membership in the Honor Society and how they needed me to help garden.

Who knew being unemployed and sitting on your ass watching UTB would pay off? Obviously the guy had really no idea what was being shown on the channel, but he works so, he's not sitting on his ass watching the channel. I mostly watch food shows anyway.

I was trying to figure out who this place was catering to. The Japanese? According to the guy the Japanese population spread out, and don't really live in the area. So they are catering to Korean and Chinese tastes since they are use to that type of food. I guess more so than a western taste. I have an idea for the place buy some ad time on UTB or in the local Japanese publications. But I didn't say that.

It was funny when he asked about anime. Since I put it on my resume because of that template I found on the web. If the resume did work I can't believe it did. Especially since it was "bad".

I'll know by Friday if I have the job or not.

Esplanade Sea Dragon Songs Singapore 50s Part 1

Part I:

Page references are from the coffee-table book, 'Remember The 50s: Objects and Moments of a Dynamic Era' by Tectum Publishers 2010 (image 3).

Nothing jolts the memory like snapshots of old. Using the coffee-table book as a guide, the content as milestones and the photographs as lightning conductors I recreated my own teenage journey as I flipped through the pages of time and reminisced the moments, momentos and music of the 50s.

Images quickly conjured in my mind as I read the short paragraph about the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (page: 18). In the first week of June 1953 when I was only 13, Singapore celebrated the coronation in style. I recalled how my parents booked one of Adelphi Hotel's uppermost rooms facing North Bridge Road so we could watch the coronation floats passing by below us. This event could have been the original concept for our annual Ching-gay parade.

A trip to the old Esplanade the next evening revealed the most fascinating sight that I had ever seen in the 50s. A dozen sampans at sea were carrying a beautifully illuminated sea dragon spouting neon lights (image 1) but from afar the illusion was so life-like and breath-taking. And this was a time before the advent of high technology and laser lights.

As I turned around to face inland, the crowned 20-storey Asia Insurance Building before us stood high and mighty in the night sky. It was the pride and joy for Singaporeans then as the building was the tallest on the island. Neon signs below the crown twinkled brightly announcing, Long Live The Queen (image 2).

In the same year certain songs played constantly over the radio waves. Bill Hayley's Crazy Man Crazy, Les Paul and Mary Ford's Vaya Con Dios, Perry Como's Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes, Dean Martin's That's Amore, Kay Starr's Changing Partners and Earth Kitt's C'est Si Bon were some of the more conservative ones featured on Radio Singapore.

Do you remember the 50s in Singapore? Or perhaps your parents do? Are you aware that God Save The Queen was Singapore's National Anthem in the 50s?

Check out Part II soon for references from the book about the hula hoop, pony-tail, Tupperware, Capris, Match-Box Cars, Cadillac 59, Playboy, Drive-Ins and James Dean.

Review: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment

Twentieth Century Fox is responsible for some of my ALL time favorite shows and movies; 24, Raising Hope, Glee, just to name a few....and I got to review two of their newest DVD releases-Raising Hope Season 1 and X-Men First Class!

A bit about Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, LLC (TCFHE) is a recognized global industry leader and a subsidiary of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, a News Corporation company. Representing 75 years of innovative and award-winning filmmaking from Twentieth Century Fox, TCFHE is the worldwide marketing, sales and distribution company for all Fox film and television programming, acquisitions and original productions on DVD, Blu-ray Disc Digital Copy, Video On Demand and Digital Download. The company also releases all products globally for MGM Home Entertainment. Each year TCFHE introduces hundreds of new and newly enhanced products, which it services to retail outlets from mass merchants and warehouse clubs to specialty stores and e-commerce throughout the world.

My Review
When I had the opportunity to review two of Twentieth Century Fox's newest releases I jumped at the chance!

The first title I received to review from Twentieth Century Fox was Raising Hope: Season One. Raising Hope: Season One was just released on DVD September 20th...and the complete first season DVD is jam packed with with exclusive featurettes, a gag reel, deleted and extended scenes, commentaries and an un-aired pilot.

Raising Hope is a fantastic comedy starring Martha Plimpton {Stef from The Goonies} Lucas Neff, Shannon Woodward, and Cloris Leachman. Raising Hope just received two nominations at the 2011 Emmy Awards and was also nominated for 'Favorite new TV comedy' at the 2011 People's Choice Awards.Raising Hope is about a 23 year old boy named Jimmy Chance who has to raise his infant daughter-Hope {aka Princess Beyonce}-after a one-night stand. Hope's mother was executed when the baby was only six months old due to her mother previously murdering many boyfriends. Jimmy lives with his parents Virginia and Burt Chance and his grandmother Maw Maw. Virginia got pregnant with Jimmy at 15 years old-she was raised by her grandmother Maw Maw. Burt was seventeen when he got Virginia pregnant with Jimmy and he now owns a landscape and pool cleaning service that he operates with Jimmy. Maw Maw is crazy but has moments of lucidity here and there.
This show is laugh out loud hysterical. The comedy is witty and original and the characters are extremely likable. My husband and I have added Raising Hope to our top favorite TV shows. Season two is now airing on FOX and we are enjoying Season two just as much as Season one!  I am so glad that we own Raising Hope: Season one because now we can watch our favorite episodes from Season One over and over again!

I was also sent X-Men First Class to review from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. X-Men First Class was released on September 9, 2011 to DVD and is the prequel to the popular X-Men trilogy. X-Men First Class stars James McAvoy {swoon!} and Michael Fassbender. The film is set in the year 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. X-Men first class focuses most on the relationship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr (aka Magneto) and the beginnings of their groups, the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. My husband and I are big fans of the original X-Men trilogy so when I got the chance to review X-Men First Class we were super excited-unfortunately we never got to see the film in theaters because I was on pregnancy bedrest. This movie was definitely worth the wait...it is fast paced, action packed, and has a great storyline. The acting is phenomenal and Hugh Jackman {Wolverine} has a quick cameo which I thought was brilliant! This is one film that everyone should own...and even if you aren't an X-Men fan James McAvoy's handsomeness and acting makes it worth your time!

some might argue a little too old-fashioned
but cute nonetheless
a fun housewarming gift

i love the vintage illustrations

the advice is good but nothing was extremely stand-outish
still a fun read to brush up on the oldie but goodie ways of running a household
great reminders for ways of cleaning and home-hunting
a few reminders are nice every once in a while

Something About You & I

My days seem so long. Like just when I think I’m done, there is just one more, or one hundred more things that I have to deal with, pet, coax and coo at in order for the rest of my life to run smoothly enough for me to keep trudging through. While that may sound selfishly indulgent it is in fact the way things have been going and I don’t see any flickering light at the end of some goddamn tunnel, least not anytime soon.

The economy fucking blows. People are horrifically bummed and clutching each and every dollar as if their very life depends on it…might in fact be true but those of us on the retail end are feeling those white knuckles worse than ever before. I’ve smiled and done my best to charm the wayward consumer that comes in looking to, well to look and not buy, more times than I care to count and the driving past shells of recently “liquidated” independent stores and restaurants on my drive to work each day is simply a depressing reminder of how close we all are to boarding up and surrendering to the mass market of medium. Fuck….

Got home this evening and realized that I had left my notebook at work, the one containing all the tasting notes needed to get my already late write ups to Randy for The Wine Country newsletter. Not sure there is anyone I can coo to at this point, I’m late and he is waiting for whatever nubbins of articulation I have to help inspire sales and get people in the store. Simply cannot believe I would, once again, be this late and find myself at well past midnight trying to piece together notes coherent enough to trigger sales for our store. Once again all I can think to say, fuck….

Seeing as there was nothing I could do I opted to make a fiercely fresh tasting dinner, a soup loaded with vibrant veggies, some seared sausage, chewy pasta and buttery shards of shaved cheese. The list of men I crave pleasing is small, I can count them on one hand even and one I was clearly failing so the one that bumps around this dusty little cavernous joint I call home, well at least I might be able to please him. Sweated along with the onions, bits of garlic and found solace in the soulful growl of Rickie Lee Jones, “Chuck E’s in love” the simple base line and unstoppable snapping my soundtrack as I chopped and tossed goodies into my broth.

Four bowls of soup later Call-o was scouring the dishes and I was locked deeply into my ipod, “So good, there’s something about this place” making me think of my store and how far behind I was in spilling my guts about all the thrilling stuff that keeps me showing up each day, aching to share them with others….all of if slamming against me causing me to feel intensely guilty. Next song up, “I’m thinking about a red wine buzz and taking it easy” the words lit up my ears and gave me that feeling that reminds me of thick meaty hands digging deeply into my tight, ready to be relieved shoulders.

“You say Baby, how’s your day?“
“I say crazy”
“But it’s all gonna be alright”
The lyrics setting the pace, pushing, prodding me to just let go and dip my soul in a bottle of wine that sings to me….

Let myself puddle and marinate in a bottle of Fabrice Gasnier les Graves Chinon. Let the gentle dried herbs, intensely aromatic flowers and suppleness spill over me, my tense shoulders and aching body. Each swallow ringing in my ears and each dribble of sumptuous liquid landing like sparks in the pit of my stomach…sending reminders to the rest of me.

I can play around with wines from elsewhere but my Loire reds, well there is just something about the two of us.

“So good, something about this place”……
Something about you and I…

Resume Toast!

My dad took me to a job fair that was being held in the old district I use to go to high school in. When I read the paper they gave out before the job fair opened. I noticed it said "introductions" and "short speech". Knowing that this was being held at my old district no speeches are "short".

This one guy was trying to boost his cred or look like an everyman or something. Saying about how he went to the different schools in the district as a child/teen. And that he went to my former high school. He wanted people in attendance to applaud it. Because according to him "it's the best school around". Huh? :/ My old high school sucks they are not good. I wasn't proud that I went there. I would not applaud it. He also said he hangs out with his mom on the weekends who happens to still live in the neighborhood. TMI dude do I really need to know? As this was happening I was thinking "Blog in a bag! Slam dunk! This stuff writes itself."

It reminded me of when I was a junior in high school and my art class had to give a presentation about our projects. One of the principals or vice or co-principal (I forget which the administration at my high school was weird and never really cohesive) This person was no higher than a principal. Gave a speech for the art project presentation. I didn't see the need of it. It was just a presentation we did in the classroom. It wasn't an assembly or awards ceremony or anything.

Maybe they are members of Toastmasters or something. (When I was a freshman in college I thought Toastmasters had to do with toasted bread.)

I finally got my resume evaluated. With my input..sorta. Like always my dad kept talking over me. His bad advice was to use a bunch of stuff I did in 8th grade. He wanted me to put a club in high school I got kicked out of? He wanted me to make a resume like a writer. I'm not sure how that would work. I'm looking for entry level jobs. Non-writing jobs. I'll look for those after I get some degree. He didn't even want me to list that I went to high school and have a diploma. Of course I'm supposed to that is the highest level of education I completed. Sure I went to college, but I didn't graduate.

I was told to tailor my resume to every different position I'm applying to. That is way too complicated. I'll just sort of tweak it like I wouldn't send a food themed resume to an office job.

When I asked about providing a photo the lady gave me a WTH face. Even though I said "What if a really ugly person wants a job?" She told me since I'm not looking for modeling or acting jobs most places that require a photo are not legit. Well maybe a restaurant wants a really cute girl to cook burgers or something.

I personally think that too many non-job awards on a resume will make it look bloated. I was also told to get rid of hobbies. I only included that because I found it on a resume template.

My dad got mad because he didn't know what linkedin is. Why did he get mad when I said I wasn't going to do all the changes I was told to. It's my resume. I'm the one who's going to be using it.

The thing was mostly a bust. Most of what was there was agencies. I don't trust them. A lot of them just want your info. There were also a few MLMs scattered about. They didn't even have a map or diagram for all the places that were represented there. I shouldn't expect much since it was held in my old district.

He thought I had never been to a job fair before? What the fuck!? I've been to plenty at all the different colleges I went to.

And of course I got in trouble because my dad wandered off and couldn't find me. I hate when that happens! He blames it on me!

What the hell is a "dignitary senator" anyway? That title sounds made up. I even put it in Google with no explanation of the title. If you know what it is please leave a comment in the comments section.

Having a KitKat

Hello - hope you've been enjoying this glorious Indian Summer we are experiencing at the moment? I've been working (quelle surprise) so haven't had the chance to soak up some much needed vitamin D, but all is good.

Things have been pretty quiet on my blog recently and that's for a number of reasons, the main one being work. For the last 2 or 3 months I've been under a lot of strain there, as my supervisor has been on holiday, then on sick, and for the last 3 weeks has been on secondment in another branch. We haven't been able to cover her shifts at all so for the last few months we have been a full time member of staff down. Her jobs have then been left to me, so to do her work on top of my own, as well as covering some other holidays, I've been completely zonked and emotional. Very emotional. She is like my Mam at work so I've been feeling quite sad that she's not there. No sleep and emotional days equals an exhausted Laura.

I've had a really weird week but it's all been worth it. On Monday she announced she wouldn't be coming back. On Tuesday I got promoted to Supervisor! On Wednesday I found out that people think of me as a young foolish girl and have been bitching about me behind my back. Not my own staff, thankfully (still sounds weird calling them my staff!). Sigh.

I got asked to be Supervisor as opposed to applying and interviewing for the position, so it's nice to see that my Manager has faith in me. I'm really proud that my hard work has been noticed and I'm starting to get rewarded for it. I'm just really down in the dumps that a) I'm being talked about, b) people clearly have low expectations and opinions of me. It's never nice having responsibility (for me personally, anyway) but if anything, they've spurred me on to show that I am the right person for the job and will be brilliant at it. Well, I will at least try.

So my time has been spent working. When I get home I can just about muster up the energy to cook myself some tea (vegetarianism is still going well, have lots of healthy eating goals in mind for October), have a bath, then collapse in front of the TV watching Cupcake Wars, Glee, and shamefully, Big Brother. Blogging has been the last thing on my mind, which I think has shown over the last couple of months.

Truth is, I just don't know if I'm feeling it anymore.

I have great ideas for a blogpost, but when it comes to putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as it is) my mind just goes blank and I shut down my laptop. That's if I even open it up in the first place. I literally cannot be bothered and have even stopped reading blogs. I check my favourites every couple of days, but other than I just don't know if it is something I want to continue with. Maybe I have outgrown it. Maybe it has outgrown me? Maybe I have other priorities right now, priorities that pay the bills. Who knows why I feel like I do, because I don't...

Hopefully my mojo will come back (sooner rather than later) and I'll see you on the other side, but if it doesn't, I am still on Twitter so you can keep in touch there :) This isn't goodbye as such, I'm just having a break (having a KitKat).

Lots of love
xoxo

My Review I was sent a few packs of Buddy Fruits fruit snacks to review.Yes parents you can finally breathe a sigh of relief....Buddy Fruits has come to the rescue! No more begging your child to finish that banana or plate of grapes! Hurray! Buddy Fruits sent me samples of their pure fruit bites in Apple, Pomegranate and Acai, Raspberry and Orange to review and these snacks are heaven sent! My daughter loves fruit snacks but I dislike how almost all fruit snacks contain artificial flavors, ingredients, and colorings...these things are not good for anyone...let alone my children! Buddy Fruits is 100% fruit with nothing else added. EVER. The fruit bites are delicious and so flavorful. The texture is great and I love that the packages are resealable. My daughter absolutely loves the fruit snacks except for the fact that they can be a bit messy {as they are pretty sticky} but a baby wipe can clean her hands in a snap. I really appreciate the fact that I can know exactly what my daughter is eating and that she can eat healthy wherever and whenever. Stuck at the airport? On a car ride? Buddy Fruits are perfect for snacking and sharing wherever you are! One package of Buddy Fruits contains one whole portion of fruit...seriously what could be better?! I highly recommend Buddy Fruits they are healthy, yummy, and perfect for anyone on the go!

Treasure Hunter Pony

I did finally break the news to my parents about my flagged application I think it has to do with my last name I really need to change it. It's totally unlucky. Surprisingly they weren't mad. *phew!* -_-"

Remember a unicorn without a horn is a horse. Unless it talks then it might be Mister Ed. If it's a pony with no horn or wings it might be Sweet Stuff. She is good at solving riddles. I always thought pegasi and unicorns were different races of horse. Which reminds me: buy a Sweet Stuff pony. (when I have the money) She doesn't look a lot like her animated counterpart.

Why does my dad want to work on my resume with me now? He never cared before or knew that I made one.

I really hope the Conrad Murray case doesn't get blown out of proportion like the OJ case was. The OJ case led to the cancellation of a lot of tv shows because people were just watching the case.

I watched another Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills episode. The preppy guy kind of reminds me of Chandler a little. At least they don't wear their colors you know like the nerdy guy only wears yellow clothes because the outfit he fights in is yellow. I'm trying to figure out how many sets are used in the show. So far I've seen; Drew's yard, the coffee bar, the lockers, the place where they transform, the place where the bad guy is, and where they fight.

Subgatory is a funny show. I reminds me of the 2 years I lived in a place like that. It was a little different since people drove vans back then instead. (it was the early 90s) It was funny when the girl passed by the glee club practicing, and there was a guy in a wheelchair and a cheerleader.
