Dusty Video Box Presents: The Blue Playlist

Being a writer can be somewhat frustrating, especially when I can't really talk about my projects with anyone in depth, let along even utter the names of the characters without a mountain of intelletual property protection. So instead, I've decided to put together a Youtube playlist for you guys to rock out on, basically the same playlist I'm using for inspiration for my current novel project. These songs are various J-Pop and J-Rock songs, pop songs and rock songs from Japan. Yeah, they might not be in English...but who has to totally understand the words to jam?! I mean, do you get mad at instrumental music because there are no words? Anyway...enjoy The Blue Playlist!

Lil Tidbits - 2/28/11

There has been a little "unfocusness" on this blog, mainly around Overmaster Wars: Resolute. And possibly for a few days, you saw a rough storyline on the subject...yeah, sorry about that. I kind of did the posting on the spur of the moment, and then second thoughts crept in. When I think about it, I think any Overmaster Wars story wouldn't be right without Brad Chung's characters anyway. It would be the equivalent of doing Transformers without Optimus Prime and Megatron(would that be Go-Bots, lol?); its more than just the characters themselves...it the "flavor" of the story as well. So if I did write this story? Thunderbolt Woman would be in it. In fact, I would use some of the other characters that I did not get to use, like The Lappe, The Lynx, Super-Eagle...and Amazing Woman(created by No Name and Superstories). Amazing Woman would have been part of the 1970s Protectors, and, unlike the others, not have a weakness of chloroform. If there are any superhero chloro-fans who would love for me to tell the story, I could...

  • The only thing holding me back on that Neutron feature I keep promising is that I want to have photos in the feature. I don't want to just write about it...I want it drenched in photos. But since I don't have the resources currently...it will be a while.

Tips to Decorate Kitchen in Apartment

The key to successfully decorating a kitchen in a studio apartment is to create a space that flows with the rest of the room, rather than one that tries to separate itself from the apartment. Decorating small spaces can be a challenging prospect for any resident. Focus on scale, color and storage in the kitchen space to achieve a cohesive look.

Scale
Studio apartments, by nature, are small spaces, while most kitchens tend to hold a lot of things, from food to kitchen gadgets. Kitchen furniture, like dining tables, chairs and storage units, tend to be large. A smaller round table with chairs that tuck easily underneath will be less jarring in the space than a full-size dining set, according to the Oh My Apartment section of the Apartment Ratings website. Keep accessories on top of counters on the smaller side to prevent the space from appearing cluttered.

Color
Color can add personality to a studio apartment kitchen and prevent it from looking too utilitarian. Base the kitchen's color scheme on colors from other accessories in the apartment, such as a large piece of art or decorative curtains the living area. Choose table linens, dishes and storage containers in these colors. Stick to bright and light colors, which will infuse energy into the kitchen space. Colors like yellow, bright blues, orange and red make the space feel happy. Dark colors and furniture may make the space feel smaller.

Mirrors
Hang a mirror in the dining area to help the kitchen appear larger, suggests House Beautiful. Mirrors reflect light, giving the room a feeling of added space. Mirrors, especially those with ornate frames, also add a decorative touch to the room. Avoid hanging mirrors with heavy, dark frames.

Vertical Storage
Storage is a major issue in studio apartments, especially in the kitchen, so maximize your vertical space. If kitchen cabinets do not reach the ceiling, use the space above the kitchen cabinets as storage, adding wine bottles, serving dishes and colorful containers. Choose items that are pretty and appropriate to be put on display. Also consider converting a small area into a pantry or adding shelving in a nearby hallway. Suspend a pot rack from the ceiling for your cookware.

Unexpected Storage
Use other areas in your studio apartment for creative kitchen storage. The experts at This Old House recommend adding wine racks below a coffee table, for example. Use a bookshelf as a false wall to separate the kitchen space from the rest of the room and serve as a storage unit for cookbooks, dishes, glasses and even pots of home-grown herbs.

Perak Gold Dinar launch today

Today, the Perak (state in Malaysia) government, introduced Gold dinars and silver dirhams. Menteri Besar of Perak, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir launch the world's first financial instrument ever made of gold and silver with a purity of 99.9 per cent or 24 karats at the Perak state secretary building in Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab, Ipoh. For a start, 1,000 pieces of gold dinars and silver dirhams had been manufactured and would be marketed through Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam (Yapeim) and Nusantara Bullion Exchange (Nubex Sdn Bhd).

Photo by Ikhwan Munir NST: Perak Silver Dirham & Gold Dinar.

Datuk Seri Dr Zambry said Perak Dinar also had higher level of quality as compared to the dinars and dirhams first produced by Islamic scholar Khalifa Abdul Malik ibn Marwan about 1,357 years ago.

"Gold dinars and silver dirhams produced then contained 97 per cent of gold and silver purity, but what we launched today are of higher quality because they are equivalent to 24 karats.

"Nevertheless, they are not made in the form of currency, but more of a new financial instrument for saving and investment," he told reporters after the launch of the gold dinars and silver dirhams here today.

He said the discussion on the production of the new financial instrument began in 2005 and it had been decided that they would be produced by Goldnet International Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture company with the Perak State Development Corporation.

The new financial instrument comes in four denominations, namely half a gold dinar weighing 2.125gm and priced at RM345, one gold dinar weighing 4.25gm and priced at RM690, two gold dinars weighing 8.5gm and priced at RM1,380 and a set of silver dirhams priced at RM260. The face of the instrument is printed with the Perak state emblem while the back is with a similar instrument produced during the era of Khalifa Abdul Malik ibn Marwan.

AllyZabba Review

Handmade Blankets that are silky and soft as a cloud!

A bit about AllyZabba

Jill Bredow, owner of AllyZabba, has spent most of her life surrounded by kids. From her formative years helping out with Sunday School to her graduation day at Biola University where she majored in Liberal Studies, she has been “all about” kids. Immediately after graduation, Jill began teaching in a local elementary school and continued to enjoy the classroom for several years. It wasn’t until her own kids were on the way that she paused her career for the position of full-time Mom.
Once her daughters were born, Jill started sewing custom blankets for her daughters and friends. Every time she’d go out with a new blanket she received compliments from people asking where she purchased such cuddly and trendy blankets. Later that year, AllyZabba was born. The online store, named after a strange combination of her two daughter’s nicknames, immediately became a success. Sewing blankets, working with resellers and designing new products for the site occupies all of the kids’ nap time and often late into the night. Hearing the great feedback on her products has been the biggest reward and keeps Jill endlessly inspired.

My Review
I was sent a gorgeous Pastel Dot-Kiwi TravelZabba from AllyZabba to review. The TravelZabba has a silky side and then a super soft minky side. I wondered why the silky material...and then I found the answer when browsing the AllyZabba site. Did you know that Babies, especially newborns love the feel of silk against their skin? Do you know why? Its because it is very similar in texture to the lining of the womb! Crazy right?  When I received my TravelZabba from AllyZabba it was beautifully packaged in a sweet gift bag....thats right no need to wrap if you are giving one as a gift! Each blanket from AllyZabba is made by hand and is beautifully crafted with gorgeous top of the line materials. I love the quality of the TravelZabba...its so beautiful {My friends have already asked me where I got it!}. My son is almost two months old and is in LOVE with his TravelZabba it goes everywhere with him. My daughter who is four years old keeps taking her brothers TravelZabba and keeps asking me for one of her own...! Looks like I will be heading back to AllyZabba very soon! I really want to get her an AllyZabba Aloha blanket...they are just GORGEOUS! AllyZabba blankets make wonderful gifts for newborns and older kids too!

Want a AllyZabba blanket? Jill has very kindly offered Cherry Blossoms {The Blog} Readers 15% off through March 31st

The company did send me a product or service for review. This in no way has affected my opinion of the product or service. This review is my opinion and has been written in my own words.

Ah Kong [阿公] - A short film on dementia by Royston Tan

Best Advertisment I have ever seen.Roystan Tan is a genius!

Explosive story

Hey all you bloggers,
well on Friday I had as some would say a blast to the past.Way into the past.I watched the original movie Toy Story! I had so much fun watching Toy Story! It really opened my eyes that a true friend is honest with you and true friends are really important because without friends and family and god we have nothing in this earth.Good friends will be there for you to fall back on no matter what. Those are true friends or to me they come in the form of Nichole,Andrea,XinYun,Cynthia,Mars,Sharan,Emma and Tamlyn and Tansy!Anyway the movie really was phenomenal but it was sad that only about 3 people from Secondary 1 showed up.Anyway it was still fun to watch! Here's a short summary: Woody, a pull-string cowboy doll, is the leader of a group of toys that belong to a boy named Andy and come to life whenever they want but chose to stay inanimate when humans are around. With his family moving to a new home and one week before his birthday, the toys stage a reconnaissance mission to discover Andy's new presents. They do this because of the fear they have of being replaced.Andy receives a space ranger Buzz Lightyear action figure, whose impressive features soon see him replacing Woody as Andy's favorite toy. Woody is disappointed and resentful at his replacement, while Buzz does not understand that he is a toy, believing himself to be a real space ranger, and sees Woody as an interference in his mission to return to his "home planet".Also Andy's next door neighbour Sid has returned from Summer camp instilling fear in Andy's toys because Sid enjoys the sound and sight of toys exploding.Andy prepares to go to a family outing at the space themed Pizza Planet restaurant with Buzz. Woody attempts to have Buzz misplaced, but ends up knocking him out the window, causing the other toys to think that Woody tried to get rid of him. With Buzz missing, Andy takes Woody with him to Pizza Planet instead. Buzz, however, climbs aboard the car and confronts Woody as they stop at a gas station. The two toys fight and accidentally land outside the car, which drives off and leaves them stranded. What will now happen to these two toys? Will they become friends along they way or will they just be pieces of plastic along the road side? You will just have to go and watch it to see.I loved it.

Saxy Guitar At Orchard Road Underground

Saturday today, 26th February at 3.00pm Orchard Road. Take the air-conditioned route to get across from Borders Books to Lido Cinema at Shaw Building and you will meet an incredible duo busking at a comfortable corner just after Marks and Spencer.
.
Mr. Mohamed and Mr. Zainal (image) smile at the shoppers who pass them as the sound of their saxaphone and electric guitar fill the cool air at the underground connection. Name a song and they will play it for you. No questions asked. I looked into their brown bag on the floor and saw a few coins and dollar notes - not much of a collection at that time of day, especially after playing a few hours.
.
To be fair to them I took a couple of pictures as I didn't want to disturb their performance. I managed to have a short chat to get their names and then left immediately, leaving something in their bag for tea-break. During the short interlude I had with the two gentlemen, they told me they were 60s musicians and remember the good times when they played at some of the clubs in the vicinity.

They are in the same corner most days of the week and if you see them, spare the blue, green or even red notes. You know they will appreciate the gesture. It is a breath of fresh air when saxaphone and guitar blend harmoniously to actualise a professional sound that only Mohamed and Zainal can produce, so different from the common electronic synthesizer that we hear so often in Orchard Road. And they play cool jazz too!
.
PLEASE, PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY.

21 Weeks!!!

Today I'm 21 weeks pregnant!!!

How I'm feeling:
I've been feeling pretty great and my energy is starting to come back! I think I'm in nesting mode because I've been obsessing over cleaning the house and working on nursery details lately :)

About the baby:
The baby is about the size of a large banana! On Tuesday the sonogram tech said the approximate weight was 15oz.

Doctor Appointments:
We had our big sonogram and doctor appointment on Tuesday! Our tech checked the brain, spine, heart and other organs to make sure our little one was developing properly. She also said she knew the sex of the baby if we wanted to find out (it was so hard to say "no"!!!)

Food:
Current favorite foods: green grapes, lemonade, Arby's (what a combination!!?)
Current food aversions: still can't even bear to think about avocados or eggs but I did eat Mexican food for the first time since November recently.

My body:
I'm wondering if strangers can tell I'm pregnant (?) because I think I'm starting to show a little more. I also have been feeling little movements in the past week - which is my FAVORITE thing ever!!

The nursery:
Most of the furniture we ordered has come, we've started painting and we've ordered the bedding (from etsy.com). Big progress!!

Baby gear:
We still need to research strollers, car seats and all the important gear before we go register.

Happy Friday!!

The Wat Dhammabucha

Down a narrow road that winds behind suburban San Antonio, past old houses and the last remains of land once called "the boondocks," lay one of San Antonio's more hidden gems of cultural diversity: the Wat Dhammabucha Buddhist mission. The bright-red and golden sign hangs amidst a hill-country style neighborhood of mostly Thai immigrants, a hill-top view of the Leon Valley water tower as traffic moves along Bandera Road.

I had only a faint idea of golden Buddha statues and ornate temples that could form a backdrop to my portrait-feature assignment of a student who chose life as a monk over a career in music after coming to the United States from Thailand in 2004.

Accounting sophomore Surasit Mankongsakulkit sits in the temple Sunday before a statue of Buddha, who isn't worshiped but simply followed for his philosophy of attaining self-enlightenment.

A Buddhist monk enters the meal hall Sunday at the Wat Dhammabucha Buddhist mission. Shoes are removed before entering buildings as a Buddhist practice of “keeping what is unclean outside,” Mankongsakulkit said.

Wan Wallace prays Sunday in the meal hall before the monks begin eating. The mission began more than 20 years ago based on Theravada Buddhism, strongest in Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. Theravada means “the doctrine of the elders” and emphasizes attaining self-liberation through meditation and concentration.

Mankongsakulkit passes food down the line Sunday in the meal hall. Buddhist practice holds that the monks eat only one meal daily, which is provided by local restaurants and other Buddhists.

Mankongsakulkit talks with fellow monk, Phra Pong. “We work a few hours a day,” he said, noting that 10 monks help keep up the 15-acre mission grounds.

Mankongsakulkit talks with Elby Flinn Sunday with his dog, Sassy. "You guys have been great to the neighborhood," Flinn said of the Buddhists. For over 20 years, the mission has strived to protect the wildlife and natural landscape amidst an increasingly urban San Antonio.

Surasit Mankongsakulkit uses a leaf blower near the temple while working Sunday. Mankongsakulkit wakes up at 6 a.m. to chant with the other monks before his 9 a.m. class here.

Movie Openings: Weekend of February 25th, 2011 - Drive Angry/Hall Pass

Last weekend, we had a surprise number 1 at the box office. Liam Neeson's crime thriller "Unknown" beat out the projected box-office topper, "I Am Number Four" in a light week of movie releases. "Unknown" inched into the top spot with $25.45M, followed very closely by "Gnomeo & Juliet" with $25.41M in a dramatically tight photo finish. The teen sci-fi thriller "I Am Number Four" rounded up the top 3 with $22.7M. That "Number Four" could not wrest the number one spot in its opening weekend might be cause for concern for Disney's Buena Vista, which had hoped to put this movie on a strong footing in order to create a new film franchise ala Twilight. Unless things improve dramatically the next couple of weeks, that's just ain't happening.

The most impressive gainer this week is perhaps the animated children's film "Gnomeo & Juliet," which not only kept up with its opening week numbers but actually improved on it slightly. The Sandler-Anniston romcom, "Just Go With It," stayed strong and came in at number 4 with $21.5M, followed by the disappointing bad Martin Lawrence-in-drag comedy, "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son." In its 2nd week of release, the Justin Bieber movie dropped almost 45% from its opening weekend business to come in at number 6 with $16.3M. Oscar nominee, The King's Speech stood steadfast in 7th place, even gaining more than 10% from its previous week's gross. And speaking of the Oscars, remember that the glitzy ceremony is this Sunday (2/27). So set your DVRs. The two hosts this year, James Franco and Anne Hathaway may not excite people as much as maybe a Billy Crystal would but let's give these two a chance, shall we? The Oscar show producers are obviously trying to attract a younger audience to the show and these two fit the bill perfectly. Who knows, maybe we might even see an Arcade Fire-like upset at the Oscars, like what happened at the Grammys this year.

Now on to this week's new movie releases:

Remember Gone in 60 SecondsGhost Rider and Con Air? Well, mash those three movies up and you get Nic Cage's new supernatural action thriller, "Drive Angry." Well, sort of. You see, unlike those films, this one is even less rooted in reality and is a throwback to those raunchy 70's exploitation films that has been made famous by the likes of Robert Rodriguez. Directed by Patrick Lussier, whose previous credits include My Bloody Valentine 3D and White Noise 2, "Drive Angry" is a non-stop action flick that barely takes its foot off the accelerator. Shot in 3-D, expect some nifty and impressive visual effects to appear. Paired with blonde bombshell Amber Heard (Zombieland) as Cage's sidekick and pursued by the deadpan bounty hunter from Hell called The Accountant (Michael Fichtner), "Drive Angry" promises to be one of those low rent films that will eventually find an audience once it hits the home video market. "Drive Angry" is currently rated at a passable 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. Here is the synopsis:

"Drive Angry 3D" stars Nicolas Cage as Milton, a hardened felon who has broken out for one last chance at redemption. Hell bent on stopping a vicious cult of fanatics who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice his infant granddaughter beneath a full moon. Milton must use his anger to go beyond all human limits in order to save his last connection with humanity.

He's joined by Piper, a young sexy-smart waitress who liberates her ex-boyfriend's cherry red muscle car in order to help Milton. Now, the two of them are hot on the trail of the charismatic Jonah King and his murderous followers. King will throw every one of them faithful under the wheels of Milton's turbo-charged Black '71 Challenger, to fulfill hist destiny and unleash hell on earth.

Another week, another weak comedy. Owen Wilson hasn't been in the spotlight in a while, not since 2008's tearjerker, Marley & Me. Well, he's back this week in the new comedy "Hall Pass", together with Jason Sudeikis (The Bounty Hunter) as a couple of middle-aged guys who are feeling restless in their respective marriages. Given a free pass to do whatever they want for a whole week by their wives, these guys soon find out that the single life may not be as they had imagined. Directed by the famed Farrelly brothers (There's Something About MaryDumb and Dumber), "Hall Pass" may not the big comeback the brothers are looking for. True to the Farrellys' reputation, "Hall Pass" can be crude, gross and occasionally outrageous but those moments do not always gel together into a cohesive and funny comedy. But if you like the Farrellys' brand of caustic humor, this may be the movie for you. "Hall Pass" is currently rated at a measly 31% on RT. Here is the synopsis:

Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) are best friends who have a lot in common, including the fact that they have each been married for many years. But when the two men begin to show signs of restlessness at home, their wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) take a bold approach to revitalizing their marriages: granting them a "hall pass," one week of freedom to do whatever they want...no questions asked. At first, it sounds like a dream come true for Rick and Fred. But it isn't long before they discover that their expectations of the single life-and themselves-are completely, and hilariously, out of sync with reality.

Loosely based on true events, "Of Gods and Men" is an uplifting and inspirational tale of sacrifice and faith. Set in the early 1990's, a time before the Islamic faith was hijacked by terrorists, this French drama details the intermingling of different religions and the important role that faith plays in the lives of the austere monks who are faced with difficult life-changing decisions. Reviews are in for this movie and they are all generally positive, giving it an impressive 88% rating on RT. Here is the synopsis:

Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay... come what may. This film is loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996.

Opening in limited release this week is the new darling of Canadian cinema, Xavier Dolan's comical ode to unrequited sexual obsession, "Heartbeats." Winning the Youth Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and an official selection for the Toronto International Film Festival, "Heartbeats" explores the complexity of our wants and desires within the context of a love triangle as Dolan brings us through all the stages of obsessive love. This Canadian French film is currently rated at a healthy 67% on RT. Here is the synopsis:

Part farce, part exploration of the complexity of love and desire, HEARTBEATS centers on two close friends, Francis (Xavier Dolan) and Marie (Monia Chokri), who find themselves fighting for the affections of the same striking young man (Neils Schneider).
