Free coins for Italian? Look like our friends in Italy were having a jackpot on their road on Monday. A truck carrying some euro €2 million ($2.5 million) in €1 and €2 coins overturned in Foggia, southern Italy, unloading its contents onto the highway and leading motorists to hit the brakes and dig in. The lorry's rear door popped open, shedding the precious cargo. Before the police arrived, some drivers stopped their cars and made off with at least 10,000 euros. Police later closed the motorway to try to recover the money.
Police in Foggia, where the accident occurred Monday, said it was impossible to establish how much money had been stolen, as many of the euro1 and euro2 coins remained in piles on the highway. But motorists acting quickly before police arrived made off with at least euro10,000 ($12,500). Police said the truck's driver and one passenger had suffered minor injuries. The lorry, belonging to a security firm, was transporting the coins from Cesena to Bari, distributing money from the Italian mint to banks.
A police spokesman said : "Our job was made very difficult as the coins had gone onto both carriageways and motorists were stopping and picking it up.
"Two drivers in the truck and two in the car were hurt but no-one was bothered about them but fortunately they were not too badly hurt.
"We estimate that at least 10,000 euros were picked up by passing motorists and we would appeal to them to return the money to its rightful owners."
One witness told a local TV station: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. People were stopping on the motorway risking their lives to pick up the coins.
"It was a real free for all and I am amazed no-one was killed as people were running across the lanes to reach the coins."
I wish to see that happen in Malaysia. Many people willing to risk their life on free coins like this. What will you do, if you stumble upon the same situation?
