Last call for sin

The post title is from my favourite song in the whole wide world - All These Things That I've Done by The Killers. J'Adore Brandon Flowers and co, though sadly, the more recent stuff doesn't quite live up to the first album 'Hot Fuss' - that was the best album ever and one you should all own in my opinion.

So, The Killers rambles aside, this is the look I've been sporting this week. Nothing special but I really like it, and despite it being another neutral look (quelle surprise), I have tried something new. Black eyeliner. Hardly groundbreaking but this is a massive leap for me. I never, ever wear black eyeliner. When I first tried it years and years ago, I thought it was too harsh for me - I have blue eyes, my skin was pale and my hair was light blonde. It got relegated to the back of my drawers never to see the light of day again. Since my hair is darker now, and I am not as ghostly pale, the brown eyeliner that I loved wasn't adding enough definition. I cracked out the black last weekend and haven't looked back since! No doubt I'll return to my beloved Chocolate Shimmer Ink before long, but until then, this is a welcome change.

Excuse the fringe - it has a mind of it's own these days! I was looking through the pictures and it looked like I had a slight ombre going on in some of the them. In 'real life' it all looks one colour, and lots lighter than it's coming across in the pictures too. I'm fancying some highlights again but I know once I start I'll end up with really light blonde hair again, which I don't want.

 

I know some girls love their eyeliner and don't feel (or look) themselves without it, but personally, I can take it or leave it. How about you?

Spring has sprung

The last few days have been absolutely glorious and I for one am glad to see some sunshine at last! I don't even mind being woken up at 6am, because it is by sunshine beaming though my window instead of a horrible alarm clock. It's so lovely. Anyway, the burst of sunshine has made me want to ditch my heavier make up and go for a tinted moisturiser with a little splash of pastel colours.

My tinted moisturiser is one I made myself. Whenever I come to the end of a moisturiser or foundation, I just pour it into a pot - tada! My tinted moisturiser is born :) Today I decided to wear dewy skin, a flash pastel green on my eyes, pink glowy cheeks and lilac glossy lips, but the colours were more noticable in 'real life'. The camera seems to have washed me out a bit, but you get the idea! I think I'd have liked a brighter green on the lower lashline and also the lilac lip doesn't look very lilac here, but it was in person.

I dyed my hair dark blonde on Wednesday. Not sure how I feel about it yet. It's hardly dramatic but I kinda feel like it's washing me out a bit - like I need a tan or something. I am planning on either ombre-ing it or adding a few highlights, I haven't decided yet. How has the weather been where you are? Reaching for the pretty pastels yet?

Shades of grey

Since November I haven't been excited by make up. It was when I was in my misery period, and I just did a simple look with wingled liner, every single day. Even over the festive period where the occasion called for a bit of glitter, I stuck to my neutral look. I call it the more 'Polished version of Me', which can only be a good thing, can't it?! It's only recently that I've started to break out of the rut but it's too simple to abandon completely! This is the look I've been sporting for the last couple of days. Still loving my Naked palette!

Review : Sleek MakeUP Molten Metals & FOTD

I had a lovely surprise drop through my letterbox last week - Sleek MakeUP's latest product, Molten Metal. The Molten Metal is a cream eyeshadow duo, with two metallic shades, Pewter and Gold Leaf. Personally, I think they're both gold - there's not enough silver in the Pewter for it to be classed as such, but it is definitely a pretty, cool gold, whereas Gold Leaf has warmer tones.

What do Sleek MakeUP say?
Introducing Molten Metal, the new metallic cream from Sleek MakeUP. The luxurious packaging holds the secret weapon to update any beauty addict's cosmetic collection. The two cream shades come in cool Pewter and toasty Gold Leaf.

As with all Sleek MakeUP colour products, Molten Metal is highly pigmented and designed to show up on all skin tones. The long lasting cream can be used on the cheek bones, the lips and also as a handy highlighter.

The intense coloured cream eye shadow smooths on to the skin like a dream and lasting long after the night has finished. Unlike most cream eyeshadows, Molten Metal stays in place whilst never creasing thus giving you a strong metallic look that will stay perfect.

Huh? Never creasing? I highly doubt it Sleek MakeUP, those are some mighty claims you are making! Nevertheless, it sounds good, right?

What do I say?
When I first opened the compact, I was a little disappointed as I thought the creams looked quite powdery and dry, but when I swatched them I was pleasantly surprised. These are by far the smoothest and creamiest cream eyeshadows that I've felt in quite a while. I was also amazed by the pigmentation of them. I'm a big fan of Benefit's Creaseless Cream Eyeshadows, but I'm often annoyed that to get the colour in the pot, you have to apply a few layers. The colour translates in one layer with the Molten Metal though - in fact, I'd say it's actually better and more vivid once it's applied, which I love.

The Press Release says that you can wear these on your lips or cheeks too, but because of the colours that they are, that won't work. I blended the swatches on my skin and it was quite a muddy colour, which would make you look dirty should you attempt it as a cheek highlight. Something pinker, creamier or peachier would be lovely though because the consistency is perfect. Also, I stepped into the shower after I blended them and the water just sat on top of them, so I guess that makes them waterproof too... which bodes well for the creaseless aspect.

This weekend I trialled the shadows. On Saturday I applied the Pewter shade on top of a primer, then blended some eyeshadows on top of that. It's common sense to set a cream eyeshadow with powder, so I packed on a variety of shades to create a smokey eye. I applied the Molten Metal with my finger and it applied and blended so smoothly and so easily. It was a dream to apply! Blending the eyeshadows on top was a breeze too, so top marks for application. I applied my make up at about 11am, and it looked like this:

My eyelids are quite hooded, so creasing is an issue for me. Even with a primer, it creases by the time I get home from work, so I wasn't expecting it to last a long time I'm afraid. However, I checked my make up at a number of points through the day, and was rather pleased to find that it was holding up really well and only saw the teeniest bit of creasing. Even then I think it's only because I have issues with my hooded lids that I could see the tell-tale signs of creasing, and I doubt anybody else would have noticed if they'd looked at me. Also, yesterday was a pretty quiet day. The most strenuous activity I performed was whisking up some custard for my trifle, so I think the lack of vigorous movement like walking and working may have helped the longevity.

At 11pm, I was off to bed, so had one last check before removing my make up and this is what I found:

I am super impressed with how long the Molten Metal lasted on my eyelids. Okay, it faded a bit and I look dog-rough (which has nothing to do with the Molten Metals and everything to do with me being tired, I might add, hehe) but look - after 12 hours it hasn't creased too badly! You can't fail to be impressed by that!

On Sunday I tried out the Gold Leaf shade. I used a primer again, then blended it over my lid using a synthetic brush. It didn't seem to blend as well with the brush, so I blended around the edges with my fingers. I thought it was such a pretty colour that I didn't want to detract from it, so only used Brule eyeshadow by MAC to blend the edges, then dusted a little bit of Benefit's Lust Duster in Nugget over the top of the cream. It's such a fine, golden sandy coloured powder that it is perfect for setting a gold cream eyeshadow without putting down too much colour... or so it is usually. Less than 2 hours later, it creased:

I never honestly expected it to live up to it's bold 'never creasing' claims, but after Saturday's success I was expecting something a little better. It also felt really greasy and I seemed to wiping bits away from my crease all day. Bleurgh. That either suggests I applied too much, or the gold shade is a load of poop.

I attempted the gold again today, just to make sure it was the application and not this particular colour. I applied it over a primer using my fingers, then packed some of Urban Decay's 'Midnight Cowboy' over the top, and blended some 'Buck' and 'Naked' from the Urban Decay Naked palette into the crease. This is how it looks at the moment, after about 10 hours of wear:

It's only just starting to crease - woohoo! Clearly, the secret to using the Molten Metals is to:

♥ Apply and blend with your fingers.

♥ Pack lots of eyeshadow on top, something that isn't too fine.

♥ Use a primer underneath - I'm not brave enough to attempt them without!

At this point I should add that these make an awesome base for eyeshadows prone to fall-out. This has been the only cream product that has kept the glitter from 'Midnight Cowboy' actually on my eyelids, instead of migrating south towards my chin. That alone earns this product brownie points! I'm also aware that in my pictures, the colours don't look very metallicy. Don't fret, I can assure you it's my eyeshadow choice, as I've not really got a wide range of metallic eyeshadows. The cream eyeshadows are in fact very metallic, and true metallic too, not the type that claim to be metallic but are actually laced with glitter.

They've been likened to Illamasqua's Liquid Metals, but I've never tried them so cannot compare. What I do know though is that Sleek MakeUP's counterpart performs fabulously (when used correctly), and I for one can't wait to see what other colours they release. Sleek MakeUP have come up trumps again!

Challenge : 10 in 10

Today's challenge was to complete my make up using only 10 products, and take only 10 minutes to do it. Sounds simple enough to most people but my mascara alone takes 10 minutes usually! The more time I have in the mornings, the longer I take to get ready. I find putting make up on to be quite therapeutic so I make the most of it, but really, I take an age to get ready! I don't know how many times I've told Mr Lollipop "I'll only be 10 minutes honey" and half an hour later he's pacing outside the bedroom with steam coming from his ears. Oops!

I tried to choose products that gave maximum effect with minimum effort, so I chose to have my new favourite deeper lip combination, and keep my eyes quite simple with subtle bronze definition. I do quite like it, it's a tamer, less fussy version of my current everyday look anyway - the only difference is my eyes are usually a bit more golden/bronzed. In the picture where I'm looking down it's a little bit too pale and cream for what I'm used to - I like a more defined crease because of my hooded lids. I still think it's pretty though. I didn't blend my blush very well either - but hey, I was against the clock! Speaking of which, how did I do for time? 

Yeah I went over, but only by a few seconds so it still counts in my eyes... hehe.

Have a go! It's quite fun and it's nice to know that I can get ready in a rush if I wake up late or something. Or it could become my everyday look, which means more sleepy time. Everybody would be happy with that, I think!

Blue challenge - a week of FOTD's

Since I got my Urban Decay Naked palette, I haven't worn anything else, so that combined with the fact that I haven't set myself a colour challenge since the Purple Week that I completed in January (feels like last week!) convinced me to delve into my collection. My favourite looks were Monday and Sunday, which says a lot about me I think - the simpler the better! I don't think I'm ever going to be one of those girls who go wild for colours. I have a friend who can't abide neutral eyeshadows - she wonders what the point of them is - but I am not that girl. I adore neutrals, and actually find it difficult and a chore to wear coloured eyeshadows. Yes, make up is supposed to be fun, but it is also supposed to make you feel beautiful and confident, something I struggled with on some days! Kudos to you if you rock colour everyday - it's damn hard!

Hair obsession

My latest hair infatuation? Plaits. Yep, the hairstyle is normally sported by Barbie-loving schoolgirls under 12... but  I have been obsessed with the sexy, grown up version - messy side plaits. The messier, more tousled and volumised the hair, the sexier I think it looks. And if it's good enough for these gorgeous girls, it's good enough for me!

And my effort - pretty rubbish in comparison but hey ho:

Not as tousled and not as sexy but I liked it anyway. I love fishtail braids. They're really easy and just look a little bit more 'polished' so can be glammed up a little bit should you want to. I can't remember what make up I'm wearing here. I think it might be MAC Softwash Grey pigment and MAC Smoke & Diamonds eyeshadow, with Illamasqua Obey lipstick. No idea about the rest, sorry!

Face of yesterday

This look is nothing really exciting at all, but I loved the way it made my eyes look so blue. I normally tend to stick to the most neutral of neutrals, but the coppery colours I used yesterday were a welcome change and still totally wearable. Ready for some cam-whoring? I have rediscovered Icescape lipglass too, which I'm glad about because I didn't realise how lovely it was until I saw some of the pictures I took. Tres pretty. Also, excuse my hair. It was still drying and is 'Au Naturale', not my favourite way to wear it! I'm quite liking the colour - it's faded quite a bit since I last dyed it though. All I need to do now is find a matching colour for my roots!

FOTD featuring Sleek MakeUP's Circus Palette

I had a lovely surprise through the door yesterday - Sleek MakeUP sent me their latest eyeshadow palette. I was super excited to find this Circus palette in the envelope because I really, really like the eyeshadow palettes from the range. They offer a wide range of colours and are of fantastic quality and pigmentation, considering they're a bargainous £5-6 per palette.

At first I thought the packaging was cheap and tacky, but the more I've played with it, the more I quite like the red. It suits the theme of the palette really well and the colours inside are just as vibrant... which frightened me at first - the yellow and orange are verging on neon! The eyeshadows in this palette are mainly matte, but the purple, navy and green are shimmery for a bit of variation. I usually find matte eyeshadows are really hard to blend, but I had no trouble with these ones. I did use a shimmery base though, so that may have helped.  I'm so glad I have this palette in my arsenal, particularly as I'm trying to break out of my neutrals rut.

My favourite colours at first glance were the turquoise, the navy and the deep purple, but after swatching I really like them all - particularly the green. The black is the blackest thing I have ever seen, it beats MAC's Carbon hands down, and the white isn't as bright or white as it seems in the pan. It's actually a really wearable colour for a highlight and it helps tone down the neon-ness of the orange and yellow.

I had a little play with it today and am quite impressed with the results - please excuse the dodgy/wavy/frizzy/messy hair (I hadn't long got out of the shower) and wonky lashes in the close-up (I forgot to curl my lashes).

This is miles and miles out of my comfort zone, but you know what? I really like it! It's so different for me and doesn't make me look as tired as I thought it would. Quite impressive.

Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick - Nectar : Revisited

When I blogged about Bobbi Brown's newest Shimmerbrick recently, Happy1234 asked if I could take some pictures of me wearing it. I just couldn't capture the gorgeousness of this Shimmerbrick in the pictures. I either look washed out or the highlighty part doesn't show up, but I promise you it's so pretty. I think it looks better on me now I have a little bit of colour, but I wore it before I caught some sun and it looked just as nice. I hope it helps some of you!
