I think it's safe to say that the Winter season is well and truly upon us, which means the dreaded dry, chapped and flaky lips are making an appearance. Chapped lips + my favourite nude lipsticks = definitely not a good look!! You may remember from this previous post that I made my own lip scrub using Vaseline and sugar. I've managed to use all of it up! It was such a cost effective product, and it did the job perfectly. I decided to tweak my mixture though because I just don't like Vaseline. My reason for making the scrub in the first place was to find a use for some Vaseline that I had lying around!
In order to tweak my mixture, I had to work out what I didn't like about it. Well the exfoliation was fabulous - not harsh but abrasive enough to slough away every little bit of dead skin, and the consistency was really good - there was plenty of lubrication so it glided along my lips easily. What I didn't like was the waxy/greasiness of the Vaseline, and the taste. The sugar part was yum, but the Vaseline part wasn't. I know, I know, it's not meant to be eaten, but what's the point in putting a product on your lips if the taste is horrible?
I had a little root around my stash for something to use instead. A lip balm, an old lipstick... anything? I came across my MAC Naked Honey Skin Salve, something I've been neglecting. I love the smell of that and I can tolerate the taste, so I thought I'd solve my problem. Then I thought, if I'm using a honey salve, why not use honey? Eliza commented on my original post that she does that sometimes, so that's what I decided to do :)
You'll need:
Brown sugar
Honey
A mixing bowl (or in my case, a tea cup!)
A measuring spoon (I'm measuring in teaspoons)
Empty container
It's so simple. To fill my little Vaseline tin, I used 4 teaspoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of honey. Give it a little mix, then pop it in your container. Viola!
I was a little dubious about it at first. I thought it was far too sticky and the honey may crystalise. I wouldn't make big quantities of this - I think I could've used maybe half of what I did. I made it yesterday and there's no crystalised honey yet, but it's still early days. I used it this morning and it wasn't all that sticky, but I put it on a damp cotton wool pad to help it along it's way.
I much prefer this to the Vaseline version. It tastes yummier for a start, and because it's so easy to wipe (or lick) off, you don't get the waxy residue. I follow with a generous layer of Blistex Relief Cream and I'm sorted!
Let me know if you have a go xx
