Don't ask for Glass Shoes

Today is Usagi Tsukino' s birthday! I hope she doesn't want glass shoes again.
Don't cry I'm not making fun of you.

Next month is Doremi/Dorie's birthday on July 30th. Here is a picture of her for reference.I'm going to talk about some entrainment related things.

Saw Craig Killborn's show. It seems like a half hour version of his tenure hosting the Late Late show. Even the theme song sounds similar.

The funny thing is that Seacrest's name is being thrown around as Larry King's replacement. I guess he could do well. I don't know. Well anybody who regularly reads this blog knows I have a beef with Seacrest.

I realized that I haven't written about Downfall. It sort of reminds me of that segment of Letterman's show when he throws stuff off the roof. He usually throws things like fruit, super balls, and beverages. The questions on that show seem kind of easy. The contestants just have to list stuff. There are categories. Millionaire or Jeopardy this is not. (although I've heard a rumor that those 2 shows have been dumbed down to make viewers feel smarter.) The stuff falling off doesn't do much for me. Jericho is a good host though.

2010 UK Florence Nightingale £2 Brilliant Uncirculated Coin Pack

A £2 coin Brilliant Uncirculated Coin Pack has been produce by Royal Mint UK to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale death as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of her Notes on Nursing falls in 2010. During the Crimean War Florence Nightingale took a team of nurses to Constantinople to care for the ill and critically injured troops and won the undying respect of the nation. The Informative presentation folder recounting her remarkable life and achievements are strictly limited to 25,000 worldwide.

The obverse of the coin bear the effigy of the Queen by the Rank-Broadley coins bear the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF. On the reverse show an image of an outstretched hand, with a second and third hand as if taking a pulse, surrounded by the inscription 1820 - FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE - 1910. The edge inscription: 150 YEARS OF NURSING.

Florence Nightingale, (12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910) was an English nurse, writer and statistician. She came to prominence during the Crimean War for her pioneering work in nursing, and was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night to tend injured soldiers. Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment, in 1860, of her nursing school at St Thomas' Hospital in London, the first secular nursing school in the world. The Nightingale Pledge taken by new nurses was named in her honour, and the annual International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on her birthday.

During the Crimean campaign, Florence Nightingale gained the nickname "The Lady with the Lamp", deriving from a phrase in a report in The Times:
She is a ‘ministering angel’ without any exaggeration in these hospitals, and as her slender form glides quietly along each corridor, every poor fellow's face softens with gratitude at the sight of her. When all the medical officers have retired for the night and silence and darkness have settled down upon those miles of prostrate sick, she may be observed alone, with a little lamp in her hand, making her solitary rounds.

The phrase was further popularised by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1857 poem "Santa Filomena":
Lo! in that house of misery
A lady with a lamp I see
Pass through the glimmering gloom,
And flit from room to room.

On 13 August 1910, at the age of 90, she died peacefully in her sleep in her room at 10 South Street, Park Lane. The offer of burial in Westminster Abbey was declined by her relatives, and she is buried in the graveyard at St. Margaret Church in East Wellow, Hampshire.

June 2010 favourites

I say it every month but this month has flown by. I think having a hectic week last week helped in that department! We had a very busy week in London and then we spent the weekend in Cardiff with my sister-in-law, to try and drum up some votes to help her win a radio competition to have her dream wedding. She made it to the final five over hundreds of other applicants, but unfortunately, she didn't make it to the final two. The two lucky brides who got the most votes spent all day yesterday trying to get as far away from Cardiff as they could on £10! I'm yet to find out who won eventually but my sister-in-law is absolutely over the moon with her runner-up prize - she got some tickets for the Mamma Mia show in Cardiff and the radio station is paying for her hen night, so she's happy! Thank you so much to everyone who voted for her. Apparently the votes were really close, and it is disappointing to fall at the last hurdle but she did a brilliant job to get that far. They're still getting married next year and that's the main thing.

Anyway, here are my favourite products for June:

ELF Powder Brush
I won this in a blog giveaway a little while back and have used it everyday since I received it. It is the softest brush I have ever felt and it hasn't shed at all, even when I'm washing it. Because I won it, I'm not sure how much it cost, but I'm almost sure that since it's from ELF it's pretty inexpensive. I love it though and will definitely be looking into more of their brushes.

MAC Cream Colour Bases - Crushed Bougainvillea and Pearl
Crushed Bougainvillea was a limited edition with MAC's Emanuel Ungaro collection a few years ago so it is unavailable now, but it is a hot, deep, berry pink. There are similar colours available at MAC Pro, I'm sure, and although it looks scary in the pan, it can be applied with a light hand to just add a glowing, pink flush. So pretty.
I'm sure you all know by now that Pearl makes a stunning highlighter, particularly when I'm trying to avoid an overload of powder products. I like to use this to help blend out the edges of Crushed Bougainvillea too, and haven't worn one without the other this month.

MAC Blush - Blushbaby
This is the blush I've been choosing to put on top of my Crushed Bougainvillea/Pearl combo. It looks really plain and boring in the pan, and admittedly, it's not the most eyecatching, but this is a lovely, neutral dusky rose that I'm certain would suit everyone. It goes with everything, and the CCB's underneath add a new dimension to it. It's a super duper pretty combination.

Illamasqua Sheer Lipgloss - Electrify
I'm normally a lippie girl but I've really been enjoying glosses this month, and I've been favouring this super pretty, baby pink lipgloss that smells and tastes like sherbert by Illamasqua. It's yum! Because it's a sheer gloss, it goes with dramatic eyes just as well as it goes with neutral eyes, so it's great for a multitude of looks.

Urban Decay Liquid Eyeliner - Minx
My eye make up has been so simple this month - a wash of MAC's Brule over the entire lid and brow bone, some Benefit Hoola bronzer in the crease, and a thick, flicky line of this eyeliner by Urban Decay. It's a gorgeous, deep turquoise/teal colour, and I'm finding it's the perfect colour to brighten up my look now that my hair is darker.

Lush Massage Bar - Mange Too
My skin is quite dehydrated, even in the Summer, and to moisturise my skin well enough for fake tan application I've been using this Mange Too massage bar. I've been a fan of the massage bars for quite some time and have to use one almost everyday in the Winter. However, because it's so hot and stuffy now, I limit my use to one or two nights a week, but that is plenty to give my skin the hydration it desperately needs. This one is lovely because it's a minty, white chocolate, honeyed banana bar of yumminess. The only thing is I want to eat it whenever I use it haha.

What have you been enjoying this month?

xoxo

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

Last night Joe and I met a group of friends at a Minor League baseball game!

And we had hot dogs all around for dinner! (and sunflower seeds and boy, those pretzels looked good too....)

It was so hot that I gave up on the prospect of cute hair and went for braids and a baseball cap. I wanted to look like this

but felt more like this. Ha!

This Friday is my last day of my job! I've been dealing with turning in my computer and some other equipment I had - it feels good to get it over with! I'll have about 7 weeks totally off before I start school. And Joe is officially now doing anesthesia full time! Big changes! :)

Happy Wednesday!!

Bake It Pretty Q&A and Giveaway!

Baking is one of favorite things to do.
Baking is my quiet time.
My Therapy.

When I first came across Bake It Pretty I couldn't believe my eyes...as I went from page to page I was astonished at all the lovely and unique items Bake It Pretty had for sale. Things that I {a pretty experienced baker} had never seen before. I wanted everything in the shop...thats right...everything. I even hear that Bakerella is a frequent customer!
Oh. The. Joy!

Bake It Pretty shop has Cupcake liners, Candy molds, Flavored oils, Sprinkles, Fondant, Mixes, Gourmet Spices, and the list goes on...

You are sure to find any baking item you are looking for at Bake It Pretty...

I am a lucky girl because Amanda, the amazing owner of Bake It Pretty was able to answer a few of my questions....read on to learn more about Amanda and her wonderful shop "Bake It Pretty!"

Hello Amanda,Tell me a bit about how Bake It Pretty began...
It began with a little, personal blog I started in 2006 just for fun.  I shared photos of the baked goods I made, often using cute cupcake toppers from an old-school, local cake supply shop.  I had so many requests and emails about those toppers that I had a true light bulb moment, "The world (and Internet) needs a unique baking supply shop!"   I started slow on etsy and worked my way up. The rest is history.
Why the name 'Bake It Pretty'?
I'm not good at naming things.  I wanted something short, snappy, catchy and kinda retro, plus easy to spell and with a URL that wasn't already taken.  Ha!  Easier said than done.  I came up with "Bake It Pretty" out of the blue and it just worked, plus I couldn't think of anything better.  I like it more now than I did at first.  It's growing on me.
Where are you located?
We are in Swannanoa (say that three time fast!) just outside of Asheville, North Carolina.  In the smoky, blue mountains.
What is your favorite item that you sell?
I'm really partial to the Best-Ever Icing Kit, I designed it myself and it's sort of my baby.  I love how simple it is, but it works great and ANYONE can use it.  Really, it's so easy. I get such a kick out of hearing from happy customers that purchased the kit and love using it.
What item is considered your 'Best Seller'?
Cupcake liners!  They always sell well, in every color and style.  The polka dots are very popular (of course.)

Who/What inspires you?
Vintage cookbooks, my grandma, spring picnics, children's parties, my sister, French-stuff, anything tiny.

Chocolate or Vanilla?
I'm a swirl-girl.  It's too hard to choose between the two!

Cake or Cupcakes?
Cake
(sorry, I know that's taboo these days, but I just love the look of a giant, layer cake.)

What is your all time favorite dessert?
Probably this crazy apricot custard pie my grandma makes.  It's very much a nostalgic thing for me, and apricots are my favorite fruit.

How about a favorite recipe?
I make these Vegan Jam Cookies often, and I adore them.  I'm not vegan, but this recipe is just so good, even better than the original version, I think.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I'm a crafty gal and I love to crochet, sew, cook, and make things. Right now we are looking for a used Minnie Winnebago to fix up as a family project and take on weekend trips.  It could be my biggest DIY project yet!

Favorite Book?
Little, Big by John Crowley and pretty much any good Steven King Book
(oh yes, I have a dark side.)

Favorite Movie?
I'm a nerdy Wes Anderson fan.  Rushmore is definitely in the top-five.  I also love the classics like Gone With the Wind, Pride and Prejudice (A&E Version only,) and Meatballs.  Meatballs is a classic, right?

Anything else you would like to share?
Thanks you so much for the interview!  We are so excited about the possibility of moving-on-up to a real retail space (hopefully) this Summer in downtown Asheville.  I think it will be quite an adventure and I can't wait to share it with everyone.

Where else can customers find you?

Yip Pak Ling, director, Singapore Mint, said: "In every Olympic, there's always a coin being issued to commemorate the event. So Singapore being the first country to host the Youth Olympic, it's also very appropriate to adopt the same tradition as the Olympic to have a coin to mark the event."

Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth & Sports, said: "This is the first Youth Olympics Games. So it's not just a commemorative, a collector coin. But it's actually the first, for the first Games, for the world and for Singapore as well."

On 14 August 2010, Singapore will unveil the world's inaugural Youth Olympic Games. The Youth Olympic Games is the first new Games the Olympic Movement has created in 80 years. Through the Games, Singapore 2010 aims to involve the youth of the world and inspire them through an integrated sport, culture and education experience, to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. Story of my Life

My interview didn't go as bad as I thought it would. Usually due to lack of experience I'm promptly shown the door. But I wasn't, and that was strange in a good way. Plus I used that interview trick I learned in sales class. It's nothing shady. Perhaps I should write a thank you letter?

I wouldn't want it to be like that lyric from "Story of my Life".
"I went downtown to look for a job,
I had no training, no experience to speak of.
I looked at the holes in my jeans and turned and headed back."

A few minutes after the interview I got a call; from Career Advisor. Those fuckers don't quit. They have called me 4 times today! >:( I thought they gave up on me since the last time they called was on June 25th. Speak of the devil! I was writing about them calling me and they called again! They have called me for a 5th time!

I'm trying to get caught on my paper journaling.

I Win Too....Sort Of

So the Wine Bloggers Conference is over, its 300 participants back home and vowing to become followers of each other’s blogs, to keep in touch and now armed with the tools to drive more traffic to their blogs, monetize their blogs or whatever it is they are trying to accomplish. I myself have become a bit disenfranchised with the whole awards and conference thing. The last little bit of hope that I had for the awards were dashed when I saw very real talent cut from the nominations and marketing blogs, (that sponsored the event) taking home awards while real writers were, in my opinion simply used as bait or to give the awards and conference more credibility. Cynical? Absolutely. Bitter? Not even close. This whole event is so very industry and as with any industry driven event the bottom line is how to make money or a name for yourself. Nothing at all wrong with that, just not at all what drives me.

I started this blog just over two years ago, my mission was simply to spotlight wines that move me, drive me wild, keep me deeply in love with what I do and with any luck introduce The Wine Country to people outside the reaches of our newsletter or who happen to be driving down Redondo Ave and see us. To use whatever voice or talent I have to inspire people to visit the store that stirs my passion and whose philosophy about wine; its place at the table, the pleasure in it, a store that places more value on your palate than on scores or industry buzz. A place and vision that I believe very much in and am convinced creates and nurtures more wine lovers than any score ever could….scores might get people started but to carry them through to the next level of enjoyment, well I think there is nothing that can replace a store full of people that know you, know your palate and want nothing more than to keep you inspired and excited to wrap your lips around the next glass.

So I too was and am looking to sell something, a feeling, an idea, a vision….never myself. In fact when I was thinking of names for this joint I was not even going to use my name, just Sans Dosage and describe myself as a retail wine buyer but seeing as that would have no connection to the store I opted to use my name and with each post….more of me. Sure I could crank out tasting notes and stories about wine regions, spend my time regurgitating information that quite frankly can be found anywhere, I could but….seeing as I get very little inspiration from that kind of wine writing, (not to mention there are a thousand others out there covering that beat) it doesn’t tingle my bits or tell me anything about the way the wine makes you feel, well I knew that the people I was looking to reach were not going to moved by that either.

For me wine has always been very personal, the flavors, the aromas, what gets one person off and leaves another flat. It’s fascinating and within each bottle I seek the wine’s personality; the way it tastes, feels, tells me about itself. I am not a clinical thinker so each wine is another personality to discover. Is that the right way to write and think about wine? Dunno but it is how I have always done it and how I have been able to connect with wines beyond knowing what’s in it and simply what it tastes like. Like I said it’s personal to me and the more I wrote here the more I walked down that personal path. I opened myself to anyone that chose to read me…shared my exploration, discovery, frustrations….my life and my story, the way wine has weaved itself into my flesh, made me the person I am. It’s all I have to give and I have been more than willing to do so in the hope that even one person is moved enough to see wine as more than a number, more than a beverage….worth every late night post, worth every exposed, unpolished second I stood naked before you.

I’ve gotten so much out of spending my time here with all of you fine people. I’ve been praised far beyond what I have truly earned. Been befriended by some of the most remarkable people, been trusted to pick out wine, and made to feel adored beyond what I have ever experienced, ever dreamed even remotely possible. Thank you. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time, lending your voice and making me feel as loved and appreciated as I ever have before. I wish there words to describe the way this feels, or that I had the talent to express it in all its magnitude but my words fail me, all I can think of is Thank You. You are the award that I display, not here on this blog but inside me each and every day.

So congratulations to this year’s Wine Blog Award winners and to all the bloggers that made the conference and were able to connect with one another, find inspiration to keep plugging along with their vision of what their place is to be in this big wine blogging world. I too was given an award this week and while not the kind I may have hoped for….initially anyway, it showed me that I have been able to do what I always wanted to, stand out in a sea of tasting notes….good or bad at least my voice made this cat feel something.

http://www.qrw.com/10summer/derniercri.htm

I was sent a link to this award givers site, a publication and man, (Randy Sheahan) I had never heard of before and after reading some of their tasting notes and demographic I can see why. Guess I don’t really play that well amongst the higher tax bracket, college graduate males that are uncomfortable confessing their age. That one cracked me up, there were three categories describing the age bracket of their readership; under 35, 35-49 and 25-55 the latter being the one with the highest percentage..um, what? At first I will admit that I was crushed and a tad embarrassed to be singled out like that, I mean being named the worst of anything kind of sucks but the thing that bugged me the most is the piece that he abridged from this blog was not a tasting note at all, well that and he used words like gushing and quivering…ick dude. So while I feel it was unfair to give me the Worst Tasting Notes award, seeing as is was not, (I did however write that wine up for the newsletter, was a very different piece as it was in fact…a tasting note) it went a long way in reminding me that I am in fact very far removed from the pears, caramel and toast style of writing….at least here and I am very proud that whatever it is I am doing here speaks to all of you.

Mr. Sheahan I will proudly wear your “stinker” award and just hope that one of those readers, maybe a 60 year old woman, will find something here worth reading and connecting to. Because you see, as silly and useless as you may have found that piece it was one of the ones that brought a crap load of women in looking to feel, experience and taste that wine…and they came back for more. Much like wine writing is very subjective, our goal is the same but we come at it with a very different approach. You through notes and articles and me through my heart and my life….the end result should always be to have more people drinking and falling in love with wine. Just doing my part kid, my way.
