Tips: Start eating healthier today!

     Many people believe that it is difficult to start eating well but that is simply not the case. When I was pregnant with my youngest (last year) I found out that I had developed gestational diabetes...if you don't have a clue what that is I will let Wikipedia explain it for you here. I had to totally revamp my eating habits/diet. At first I was angry that I couldn't eat whatever was lying the counter and that I actually had to make an effort to insure that I (and my unborn child) were getting proper nutrition. In hindsight I am actually very grateful that I had gestational diabetes because it helped me be more aware of what I was eating and how different foods affected me both physically and mentally. During my pregnancy I relied on great (low carb) snacks to get me through the day-such as;

Nuts
Peanut Butter with a small slice of Whole Wheat Bread
Kashi Bars
Fruit
Lean Meat
Vegetables
Whole Wheat Pasta

I was super nervous that I would have to give up sweets completely but I found that after about three weeks I didn't crave sweets like I used to. For dessert I would have two or three Hershey Kisses or Peanut M&M's and I would be set! The key to eating healthier is taking one little step at a time...and once your kids/significant other start seeing you eating healthy they will want to join in. See my tips below for ideas on how to get started on a more healthier you....

1.Throw away the junk food (I know you have it...oreos, candy, chocolate-you can hang on to the dark chocolate, sodas, sugary cereals, etc.)
2. Put healthy food where it can be seen
3. Wash fruit and keep it ready in the refrigerator for a grab and go snack
4. Read the labels at the grocery store...if sugar is included in the first three ingredients it is 'junk food'.
5. Play classical music-music is a great mood stabilizer and will help you feel better and your energy up throughout the day
6. If you slip up and have a cookie don't be discouraged...if you don't succeed try, try again!

I wish you the best of luck-I hope some of my tips help you get on the road to a healthier NEW you!
