About the artist:
JOOM KLANGSIN
was born in 1973 and grew up in Bangkok, Thailand. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Silpakorn University. During her four years at Silpakorn, Joom spent time teaching children at the children's art school. After graduating in 1995, Joom became a graphic designer for the company 711 in Bangkok. Then in 1996, she came to the U.S. to study graphic design at the Academy of Arts College, San Francisco. In 1998, Joom returned to Thailand to work with her father, who owns a shoe company. There she worked as a shoe designer and as a production manager.
After getting married in 2002, Joom moved back to San Francisco, where she currently lives and works on her paintings. Finding inspiration in the environment and the world around her, Joom uses her intuitive and humorous imagination to create a uniquely surreal pop world in her paintings. Her style is full of color and unique shapes that she considers to be "insane." Artists that Joom admires include Joe Sorren and Mark Ryden, as well as outsider artists and painters who are mentally challenged.
I ran across Joom at Modern Typography. As soon as I spied her silhouette pillows- I was intrigued. I shoved them into the back of my mind for a while, until up popped her Facebook page with her latest designs:
I love these Quail Pillows. Gorgeous! |
And this blue...beautiful. |
Love this as well! |
Needless to say, I want them. But I don't know where to start! Can't you just see these anywhere in your house???
She was kind enough to answer a few questions...
1. You paint, make prints, and pillows--if you had to choose one to do for the rest of your days, which would it be?
I wish, I could spend more time on my paintings. It's more relaxing. I can let my imagination flow.
2. You've been featured in many places---what's your favorite so far and which one has brought you the most traffic?
When my mini pillow was featured on the Rachael Ray Show in 2007. That was the big hit for me.
3. Do you have a favorite pillow, print, etc?
At the moment, I love the "birdie shares love" print. I think it's cute and kind of funny, full of love.
4. Are you able to create your art full time, or do you also have another job?
What I am doing is my full time job.
5. Where do you see your business going in the future?
I would like to have my own website in the future and have more lines of every day living products.
