'The Powder Blue Negligee: Memoirs of a Probation Officer' Review

The Powder Blue Negligee: Memoirs of a Probation Officer is a book full of funny and exciting anecdotes published in 2008. Since then it has attracted the attention of CBS executive and actor Sean Hayes in May of 2009. Mr. Hayes contacted the books author Mr. Niemann and told him he wanted to create a series based on the book. Mr. Niemann was elated...the series is currently "in development" because Mr. Hayes is currently busy filming "The Three Stooges".

I was delighted to be able to review "THE POWDER BLUE NEGLIGEE: Memoirs Of A Probation Officer"!

So you might be wondering why the author would affix such an outrageous title to his book? Well, I am not going to give it away...because it has to do with one of my favorite stories in the book...so I will let you watch author Kurt Niemann on AZ TV 7 tell you the story...

The Powder Blue Negligee: Memoirs of a Probation Officer was written as a "fictionalized autobiography" as not to create a legal problem. The author {as stated in the old T.V. Dragnet series "changed the names to protect the innocent {himself}." He also changed the locations and sometimes even genders of the offenders as well. Nevertheless, all the anecdotes he wrote actually DID happen.

Here is just an example of the type of stories you will find sprinkled throughout The Powder Blue Negligee: Memoirs of a Probation Officer...

"During a part of my years with the gangs and hookers, one of my partners was a delightful young lady named Kim. Kim would ride with me on the back of my motorcycle whenever I had to conduct an investigation in a particularly sleazy low income neighborhood, because many of the women there---crackheads and hookers---would do their best to get cops and P.O.'s in trouble by claiming unwanted sexual advances. Kim served as my witness, and didn't the women in the hood glare daggers at her! At one time, one of them complained to the Chief that she'd seen Kim and me making out. No cigar---Kim was a confirmed lesbian. Ah well---"

This book is a page turner...and leaves you wanting more stories even after the book is finished.

Publishers Review:

Through the eyes of a frontline officer, these tales are raucous, fun, and heartbreaking in equal measure. Loosely autobiographical, The Powder Blue Negligee: Adventures of a Probation Officer imparts a few unforgettable memories of a career spent in service. Beginning as a rookie on probation detail in the late 1960s and becoming a member of a multi-agency unit, then finally as the designer and coordinator of the first juvenile detention officer academy in the state of Arizona, this officer discovers what it takes to keep an eye on the bad guys—and the good ones—all the while keeping his wits, wisdom, and sense of humor about him. From dealing with car thieves, prostitutes, and hoodlums, these adventures are often lighthearted, at times surreal and always entertaining.

Eighty-two vignettes in all, each short anecdote reads as a separate memory, flashback or quip. Broken into eight chapters with titles such as “Projects and Barrios,” “Some Highlights from the Field,” “Jail and Detention,” “Homes Away from Home” and “The Academy,” readers are afforded insight into what it is to serve one’s community with honor, decency and integrity. A of becoming an officer of the law, or even considering breaking the law—read this book. A few tales are truly sad: readers will learn of a cop who arrested his own son after a high-speed car chase and a transsexual prostitute named Shallah. Readers will learn that mothers will do almost anything to keep their babies out of detention and that New Year’s Eve is not a good time for a detention riot.

I highly recommend this entertaining book...it is laugh out loud funny, thrilling, and fun!
