I do enjoy the sunshine and am glad when it finally arrives every year, but I've got to be honest, Summer isn't my favourite season. I love the darker evenings where I can snuggle up on the sofa with G... I love my Uggs... I love chunky knits and layering them... I love the darker, vampy colours I can wear... I love yummy, hearty food like casseroles and puddings... I love the countdown to Christmas... I love the beautifully coloured leaves crunching beneath my feet...
However, I don't enjoy the flaky, chapped, cracked and sore lips that comes with it. Blistex Relief Cream is a miracle product that sorts out any problems I may have lip-wise, but extremely flaky lips can only be sorted by one thing - exfoliation.
Some people use an old dry toothbrush to scuff their lips, others use a specially formulated lip scrub. I hate the toothbrush method - it makes me cringe - and I'm yet to find a lip scrub that gives me the results I'm looking for. I've had my eye on The Lip Scrub by Sara Happ. It comes in six different 'flavours' and each one sounds delicious - Vanilla Bean, Brown Sugar, Cocoa, Cinnamon Sugar, Almond Creme and Peppermint. Yum yum indeedy. They're priced at £19.95 and are available here. I've added one to my basket numerous times, but I can't quite bring myself to part with £20, for a lip scrub. Nope, my Mammy tought me better than that!
All of the online reviews I had read said that although it's a fab product, it's not worth the £20 as it's just a glorified Vaseline. Hmmm... what a coincidence - I've recently cleaned out all my handbags and found 4 different Lip Therapy tins of Vaseline that I needed to do something with. A quick scout around the kitchen and I was ready... Vaseline? Check. Brown sugar? Check. I was good to go. I present to you, my very own Brown Sugar Lip Scrub.
Want to make one? It's easy peasy! Scoop out your Vaseline into a suitable mixing bowl, add a teaspoon of brown sugar and a teaspoon of white (or whatever sugar you want to use), then mix it all up. Check the consistency, and if you want it more abrasive (like I did) add more sugar. Less abrasive? Add some more Vaseline. Shimples.
I wouldn't recommend the Aloe Vera Vaseline - it smells and tastes like hairspray. Bleurgh. I used normal Vaseline and just used the empty AV tin :) Granted, my version doesn't look as high-end or pretty as hers, but it does the job which is all that matters. It scrubs away every last flake, and because the Vaseline helps to lubricate your lips, it doesn't feel scratchy or abrasive. Plus you get a little sweet kick if you taste a bit by accident ;)
I like to use it at night then follow with some Blistex, and when I wake up in the morning my lips are good enough to rival Angelina Jolie's. Okay, slight exaggeration, but they sure as hell feel smooth and soft! Let me know if you have a go!
