Book review : I Heart Paris by Lindsey Kelk

I Heart Paris is the latest installment in the 'I Heart...' series from Lindsey Kelk. I've already reviewed New York and Hollywood, so thought I'd complete the trio and review Paris for you too!

We are reunited with our loveable heroine Angela Clark once again. With her BFF Jenny setting up home in LA, she is trying her best to get her life back on track following her mishaps in Hollywood. Her career is going from strength to strength since her expose on hot-actor-who-nearly-ruined-her-life James Jacobs, and things are going brilliantly with her drop-dead-gorgeous rockstar boyfriend Alex. Alex is about to turn 30, but has to spend it in Paris promoting his new album and performing at a gig. As luck would have it, Angela gets an all expenses paid trip to Paris so that she can write a feature for Belle magazine. Her life is just perfect. As the loved up pair head off to the most romantic city in the world we're left to wonder what could possibly go wrong? Well, as we've all come to know and love about Angela, her life doesn't always run so smoothly...

If you've read my reviews of the previous I Heart... books, you'll know that I absolutely loved the first one set in New York, and although I enjoyed the sequel in Hollywood, it wasn't as good. I think Lindsey Kelk lost her mojo a bit with IHH, so I didn't know what to expect from I Heart Paris. As expected, the cover is so pretty, and you don't need to have read the first two books to have an understanding of Angela or her life.

I Heart Paris seemed to have the fast pace of the IHNY, which I love. IHH slowed itself a lot and the story just seemed to plod along, but Lindsey picked up pace and packed this story with umpteen twists, turns and sub-plots that kept me gripped until the last page - just the way I like it! Everything that happened seemed relevent to the main plot, unlike IHH where there seemed to be a lot of pointless sub-plots just to fill a few pages. Lindsey writes about Paris with such passion that I was immediately transported there. I loved how she described everything, and though I've never been I can imagine Paris clearly in my mind. She focuses not on the typical touristy parts of Paris, but more the cool side and the culture, which is really refreshing. I want to go there and I want to go there now!

The thing I particularly liked about this book is that you get to read more about the relationship between Angela and Alex. It's nice to read a story where the woman isn't scorned and bitter, and the love interest is actually a pretty decent guy! I loved how Lindsey focused more on building her relationships (like with her mother and best friend from London Louisa) rather than the shopping aspect. It was a bit more of a grown-up chick-lit story, but don't be fooled, it still had it's silly moments! It had some proper, laugh out loud moments too, and Mr Lollipop thought I was crazy as I'd remember a part of the book and just get a fit of giggles as he was trying to go to sleep. I did miss Jenny though - she was one of my favourite characters from the first two stories.

Everything that could possibly go wrong for Angela, does. Alex's beautiful ex-girlfriend (aka the girl who broke his heart) is also in Paris, and she is trying her hardest to win back Alex. As if that wasn't stressful enough, Angela's suitcase full of borrowed designer clothes and all her blogging essential gets blown up, so she has to fight for Alex whilst looking a bit rough. Plus, somebody is out to sabotage her article! Ooh some girl's are just not meant to have any luck. As ever, the book was a little bit OTT, but you couldn't help but get engrossed in it. You really get involved in Angela's life, and though it seems far-fetched, you believe it. After all, this is Angela Clark, the girl who runs away from her problems. So much so that she left 3 countries to escape them! The conclusion inparticular was very extreme, but it suited the dizzy character well. A very easy read that is the perfect escapism for a Sunday afternoon.

Rating : 8.5/10 - much better than I Heart Hollywod but still not as good as I Heart New York. I loved reading how Angela got herself out of latest scrapes and the excitement and wit that I loved from the first story was definitely back in abundance. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next installment.
