Things I learned through July 2011
Happy Sunday you lovely people! Hope you've enjoyed July. I realised the other day how close Christmas is. I know, I know, it's only August tomorrow, but because we have such big families, Mr Lollipop and I start Christmas shopping at the end of September. Which is Just. Next. Month. Technically. Next month, I will be Christmas shopping. For realz. So that's how I'm stunned that Christmas is so close. But, let's not wish our lives away - we have lots of sunshine and BBQ's to get through first! This is what I learned this month:
1. Meat and fish don't agree with me.
2. My Gran's bathroom has the best natural lighting. I love posing in her bathroom mirror!
3. How to use the new computer system at work. Really interesting stuff...
4. I am addicted to YooMoo frozen yoghurt. The vanilla one especially is delightful.
5. I'm awful at goodbyes! Even temporary ones.
6. Women are not very good at comedy. Sorry ladies.
7. I tend to live in my own little bubble. I like it. I avoid lots of melodrama around me that way.
8. Wedding venues that tick every box are impossible to come by.
9. I can be over-fussy.
10. I don't necessarily think that over-fussy is always a bad thing.
11. Hayfever is rife this year, and even people who have never suffered are suffering.
12. Blogger is a pain in the arse.
13. Giving up meat is simple.
14. It just means I have to be a little bit more creative with what I eat.
15. Mr Lollipop is getting broodier by the day. It doesn't help when I get a few rare moments of broodiness.
16. If using water in smoothies, it is best to use a sparkling, flavoured variety. Using bog standard tap water will just dilute the flavour. Obviously. Seemed a good idea at the time.
17. I don't like olives.
18. I'm also not big on Quorn.
19. Linda McCartney's vegetarian range is quite impressive though.
20. When workmen burst a waterpipe and the water is cut off at home, mouthwash makes a good water alternative for brushing teeth.
21. The final installment of Harry Potter makes me cry, regardless of whether it is a film or a book.
22. Graze boxes are amazing. Love them!
23. Giving a 2 year old a hose pipe to fill his paddling pool will end in a disaster. A soaking wet Laura shaped disaster.
24. I'll never tire of watching Friends.
25. I can't seem to multitask, because...
26. ...using hair straighteners whilst playing with my iPhone will result in me using said iPhone to try and straighten my hair and...
27. ...as fantastic as iPhones are, they cannot straighten hair.
28. Amy Winehouse lost her battle with drugs.
29. People can be super judgemental, often on issues they don't fully understand or have no first-hand experience of.
30. Chanel Rouge Coco Shines are glorious lipsticks and I simply must expand my collection.
31. Someone is pregnant but I can't say who. Not that any of you know her but she might stumble across my blog. Or someone who knows both of us could tell her and I'd be up to my knees in doodoo. Not nice.

Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow
That's what I get for coincidentally checking my email at 3AM. The email was sent at about 10:30PM the day before.
Coincidentally before my interview I was watching The Monkees episode "Monkee Versus Machine". I love that episode! It's one of my favorites. My favorite part is in the beginning when they are reading the want ads most of the jobs they read about have strange requirements.
Maybe it's a good thing I didn't get to work at that other sandwich place.
I took my dad's stupid advice and brought 3 resumes. The other 2 I didn't hand out got ruined. I got asked about the restaurant and what I like there. I said Spring Rolls. The guy almost kept my only food card copy. I got hired. I think...? :/ The guy told me about orientation. I'll worry about my long nails until I know I got the job.
I just hope nobody reads my review of boba on here. X-X
I picked up more of that candy that tastes like sodalicious. The hi chew is over priced at the mall. It's $1 just for the roll. I was going to buy a Maneki Neko, but I forgot which raised paw means wealth. (it's the right paw)
If I do get hired I'll probably be one of those snobby people who brags about where they work and how good they are at their job and the food they make.
I didn't notice that my purse was totally coordinated with the shirt I was wearing.

1975 - SuZanna Teo And Curtsie: 'Loving You'
In April 1975 a young lady from the U.S., with a five-and-half-octave vocal range, composed and recorded a song, Loving You (not the Elvis Presley version) with much success. The singer was able to enunciate in the high registers to set her apart from other whistle-register singers. Unique *Minnie Julia Riperton became a star when Loving You sold a million copies and opened her to the pop music world. Eight months later in December, a young lady from Singapore sang the same hit and won the 1975 Discovery #Talentime at the Shangrila Hotel in Orange Grove Road. Her main prize was a recording contract with EMI where she recorded the Riperton number with 11 other covers on an LP titled, SuZanna Teo Loving You (EMGS 5003).
Nineteen year old Suzanna, who was a Pre-University student at Victoria Secondary School, owed her singing success to Curtsie, the guitar she strummed and hugged during the competition. In her last year as a teen, Suzanna explained that music was her life for the moment and something which she could do "wholeheartedly." When asked about her future plans during her interview with The Straits Times, she added that she wanted to be a social scientist.
In addition to her grand prize, she won a trip to Hong Kong and an appearance at the **Frances Yip TV Show. Suzanne also bagged a pewter tropy, a $200 record voucher, a cassette player and other useful gifts. According to the Straits Times report, an RTS (Radio TV Singapura) announcer Adaline Scheerder was the runner-up and Samuel Owen, a veteran vocalist, won the third prize. The judges were a distinguished line-up of personalities then and included, George Favacho from RTS, Daisy Devan and Keith Bruce from EMI and Lawrence Magnan from Shangrila Hotel.
This interesting LP was the only one recorded by Suzanna. It was produced, arranged and conducted by Reggie Verghese (Quests' Lead Guitarist). The recording/mixing engineer was Vincent Lim. The sleeve design was by THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE with photography by Bernard Chan.

Like our own Olivia Ong today, Suzanna Teo was a hit in the mid70s. According to Audie Ng, music impresario, he contracted her to sing at the Imperial Hotel Singapore in the early 80s when she was at the top of the hit parade. Have you heard Teo singing or listened to her recording before? Tell us.

Old Yellow Notepad Stories
I was cleaning and I found my old note pad with some stories I wrote in them. A while ago I tried to type them up or I did. I forgot what happened to them. I think I might have given them to my dead friend. I remember getting feedback from her about some of the stories. They flow well I guess... There are just way too many Power Ranger references. The one thing was that they were organized in chronological order. Maybe I have been fixated on chronological order for awhile. The stories aren't that long. One I typed out was about 1 paragraph long in 11 point font single spaced.
It will be good in case there are no classes available, and I get stuck taking another memoir class I'll have some prewritten stories. I was so unprepared my first time. When I think about it that would be like doing unassigned math homework before taking a math class.
Who knows these might be a jumping board to something else. These vignettes might make great 4 panel comics or something. As long as I don't feel they are mediocre then I'll be ok.
The problem is that those stories and a bunch of others I wrote on paper need to be typed out. I think I need an intern like Kramer got on Seinfeld. Which is a woman who lives in a messy house. That does not contain a chicken.

I recently received a giftcard from one of my sponsors, SkincareRx, and literally spent days browsing the website trying to decide what to buy. It stocks many of the biggest brands and there were hundreds of things I wanted!
In the end I chose some Stila goodies, as it's not a brand I've tried before but have heard good things about. I plumped for the Stila Convertible Colour in popular shade 'Lillium', and a Stila Lip and Cheek Stain in 'Yumberry Crush'.
I have to say I am a fan of the cardboard packaging. I'm loving all things natural and rustic lately, and this packaging really appeals to me. I also loved the packaging of the actual products - pretty colours and a metallicy finish. Lovely.

The Convertible Colour has been on my radar for years, so I chose the most universal shade there, Lillium. This is smaller than I was expecting, but it's still a substantial size with a lot of product. This is a muted, natural, rosy peach type of colour (excellent describing skills there...) and would definitely suit all skintones. Because it is a neutral shade, it would compliment any look, so I can see myself using this a lot. It's a lovely, smooth, creamy er... cream, and it glides on and blends beautifully. It doesn't look or feel greasy on me, but then I have dry skin anyway. As far as longevity is concerned, I don't notice it lasting any longer than my other favourite cheek creams, MAC Cream Colour Bases, but it lasts well into the day for me. It doesn't wear off enough for the need to reapply, but then I am lazy when it comes to reapplying my make up through the day. I just can't be bothered. If you are familiar with the CCB's, you'll notice it has a kind of powdery finish when it sets. The Convertible Colour is nothing like that - it stays creamy after blended and gives a dewy sheen to my skin. I love it. I'm very impressed with this cream and would love to try more colours.
Mrs Beckham tweeted recently that she has found the perfect lip and cheek colour for summer, and revealed it was Stila's Lip and Cheek Stain in Cherry Crush. As soon as I got wind of this I knew I wanted one, but the Cherry colour was too red and scary for me. Enter: Yumberry Crush! How sweet is the name? That partly helped my decision (it's cute!) but when I discovered it was a frosty pink, I was 'in there like swimwear'. It didn't disappoint either. It is a tad more rosy than I was expecting but the shimmer is so pretty and it smells absolutely divine. I love that it can be layered too so I can build up the colour should I require. I am a huge fan of the colour it stains my cheeks - a pretty, vibrant pink, but the shimmer makes it pretty hard for me to wear on a daily basis. In the warmer weather and on nights out or the weekend I would definitely wear it on my cheeks, but for now it is reserved as a lip colour only. As a stain, it lasts all day on my cheeks, and I get a good 4-5 hours wear on my lips. Very impressive!

I ordered this on a Sunday night and it arrived the following Monday, so 8 days in total. It was perfectly packaged and inside my box were some skincare samples, which was nice. The shipping cost around $25, which works out at about £15. I don't think that's bad considering it is from the US, but it's something to consider, especially as I never know when I'm going to get hit with customs charges. I'd definitely use this site again, though I'd reserve it to treat myself to some US-exclusive brands.
